It is a well-quoted axiom that in sports playoffs, anything can and often does happen.

Such was the case in the girls Western 13C basketball tournament this past weekend in Frenchtown, where the Drummond girls knocked off pre-tournament co-favorite Charlo 44-30 to claim the district’s championship and a number one seed in this coming weekend’s Western C Divisional tourney in Butte.

Drummond, which advanced to the title game following an opening round squeaker of a win over Hot Springs, 24-22, then a 34-29 victory over Seeley-Swan Friday, emerged from the first quarter against Charlo holding an 11-4 lead.

Drummond added three points to their advantage in the second quarter, giving them a 21-11 halftime edge.

The two teams battled even up in the third quarter, sending the game into the fourth quarter with Drummond ahead 31-21.  The Lady Trojans tacked four points onto their lead in the fourth quarter as they pulled away enroute to the 14-point win.

Both teams move on to the Western C Division tournament in Butte this weekend.

Drummond’s Kimber Persons led all scorers with 25 points, while Charlo was topped by Madison Harris and Seeley McDonald, both of whom had 10 points for the Vikings.
