Last week we reported that about 200 feet of shoreline on Lake McDonald had sunk into the lake just south of the Lake McDonald Lodge. The front page featured a photo of the slump and the boat house near the Lodge that went with it.

It had been a record wet year with 22.36 inches of precipitation. The normal was 15.42. Hugh Foley was visiting family in Martin City. Foley and his team won a gold medal in rowing in the 1964 summer Olympics.

Scott Stewart, 24, of Madison, Wisconsin and other climbers abandoned their plans to try to climb the north face of Mount Cleveland in Glacier National Park in the winter. The men were worried about avalanches and other hazards. The north face is nearly vertical and goes 4,000 feet to the summit of Glacier’s highest peak at 10,466 feet.

Big Mountain had to lower about 60-plus stranded skiers from a broken Chair 5. All told about 60 skiers were lowered by ropes and slings. The temperature at the time was 10 below zero with a light breeze. It took a few hours to get everyone down.

Plum Creek had invested $6.5 million in its Columbia Falls plywood plant to make a new material called “ultracore,” which was supposed to be stronger and straighter than traditional plywood.

Plum Creek’s stock hit an all-time high at $39 a share. The stock surge came as the wood products industry as a whole was seeing gains. In addition, the company’s real estate segment reported $42 million, as the company sold off some of its prime real estate holdings.
