I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 4, 2025 3:35 PM

IDAHO FALLS — In their third straight true road game, the Lady Bulldogs held Columbia University (NCAA Division I) commit Shay Shippen to 13 points below her season average, but the host Lady Griz pulled out a 13-point victory on the final day of the East Idaho Holiday Shootout.

Sophomore Brecken Mire, who led Sandpoint in scoring for the fifth straight game with a game-high 17 points, was responsible for the key defensive effort which gave the Lady Bulldogs, who trailed by just four points late in the game, a fighting shot.

"They played for a state title last year and Shay Shippen is a heck of a player," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "Brecken did a tremendous job keeping her down, but they had some other kids that stepped up and hit some big 3s."

Sophomore Livia Driggs continues to be a 3-point threat; she hit three 3-pointers and added 11 for the Lady Bulldogs while senior Chloe Laybourne pitched in six points, five rebounds, two assists and three steals.

"We were hoping to get a win today and the girls played hard, especially for their third game in three days," coach Love said. "We didn't shoot the ball the way we needed to, especially on the road. Except for the wins part, we got so much out of this trip in regards to on and off the court... the people in Idaho Falls do a tremendous job with this tournament — it's very welcoming and a lot of fun."

Shippen, a senior, and sophomore Macy Marlow tied for a team-high 14 points for Skyline, which led 34-24 at halftime.

Sandpoint (6-6) will finish off a six-game road trip on Tuesday when they head to Lakeland for their first 5A Inland Empire League match of the year.
