PREP BASKETBALL: Sandpoint boys use big third quarter to down Priest River

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 week, 4 days AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 6, 2025 9:45 PM

BOYS

Sandpoint 59, Priest River 46

PRIEST RIVER — Junior Logan Roos hit four 3-pointers, all in the third quarter, and Sandpoint shrugged off a slow start Monday to capture a non-league win over Priest River.

"We were a little slow to get started again, which has been something we've dealt with this year," Sandpoint High head coach Brian Childs said. "They played a 1-2-2 zone against us, which we really haven't seen, but once we got adjusted I thought we got some pretty good looks. In the second half, we were able to get the ball inside which opened some other things up."

Roos scored 14 points in total and had five rebounds, senior Emerik Jones scored 19 points and hauled in seven rebounds, and junior Kingston Corbett scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half to give the Bulldogs the boost they needed.

"Logan and Emerik, when those two guys play well, everyone else tends to play well," coach Childs said. "It was good to see those guys come alive in the second half. I thought Kingston really helped us down the stretch and utilized his size down low and gave us some timely baskets when we were trying to extend our lead. He's been a pretty consistent player for us all year — he's filling the stat sheet and doing a lot of things well right now."

Priest River, which led 28-23 at halftime, was paced by senior Sawyer Staudt who racked up a team-high 15 points and three 3-pointers. Senior post Carter Cook had 11 points, junior Ian Lammana nine points, all from beyond the arc.

"We knew we were definitely better than what we showed in Sandpoint on the 20th," Priest River High head coach Kevin Wylie said. "I took over this program just three weeks before the season started, so it's taken some time for the boys to get used to my system, style of play. Tonight, we had a game plan, executed it pretty well for the most part... we just got tired. Sandpoint is such a big, long, physical team. We just ran out of steam in that fourth quarter."

Sophomores Logan Iverson and Knox Williams, and junior Caiden Gion, pitched in four assists each for Sandpoint (2-7) which hosts Moscow on Thursday.

Senior Palmer Coleman had a team-high seven rebounds and four assists, junior Lucas Mathews a team-high three steals for Priest River (6-2), which will host Timberlake today.
