PREP BASKETBALL: Jones' 26 lifts Sandpoint boys past Ridgeline
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 6 days, 2 hours AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 11, 2025 9:40 PM

BOYS
Sandpoint 77, Ridgeline 65
SANDPOINT — Senior Emerik Jones recorded a game-high 26 points, including three 3-pointers, and the host Bulldogs scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to down the Falcons on Saturday.
After an evenly split first quarter, Sandpoint worked the ball down low in the second and used an 18-7 run to take a 10-point lead into halftime. Ridgeline rallied in the third, but the Bulldogs hit their free throws and made some timely baskets late.
"We knew they were going to make a run at some point and it was going to come down to how we handled it," Sandpoint High head coach Brian Childs said. "We made some plays, shots tonight that we haven't made this season. When teams have went on runs we haven't been able to answer, but tonight, we never let them take the lead. It was a good team win with everyone contributing."
In addition to Jones' 26, the Bulldogs also got double-digit scoring contributions from sophomore Knox Williams (11), who also had three 3-pointers and a team-high five assists, and sophomore Brock Yarbrough (10), who hauled in seven rebounds and got his first varsity start on the night.
Sophomore Logan Iverson and junior Kingston Corbett had eight points apiece while senior Wil Leisy also had eight and converted a 3-point play and two free throws late to seal the deal.
"What I also thought we did well tonight, is, we didn't dwell on a turnover — we just moved on to the next play," coach Childs said. "We got back defensively and our body language was good. I'm happy for the boys ... I think this is a big win for us."
Sandpoint (3-7) will look for their third straight win today when they pay a visit to St. Maries, who's ranked No. 4 in 3A.

GIRLS
Ridgeline 45, Sandpoint 44
SANDPOINT — Sophomore Brecken Mire had a team-high 14 points, sophomore Jordyn Tomco tallied 13 but the host Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Falcons in a non-league contest Saturday.
Sandpoint raced out to a 7-1 lead, and led by as much as 10, but Ridgeline chipped away and eventually Emma Myers, who scored a game-high 22 points, hit a 3-pointer with 2.4 seconds remaining to give the Lady Falcons the advantage — their first of the game.
"Credit to Emma Myers on that shot," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "She played a great second half and made some tough buckets against a tough defense. I thought we did a good job defending her throughout the game."
Ridgeline, which improves to 10-2 on the season, was aided by 10 points from Habiba Adam.
Sophomore Livia Driggs added 11 points, including two 3-pointers and came away with a game-high four steals for Sandpoint (7-8), which hosts Coeur d'Alene today.
"Being in a game like that with a team like Ridgeline ... they're having a successful season which is going to continue," coach Love said. "We were able to stand toe-for-toe with them tonight. I wish it was a win, but I told the girls afterwards that the progress that they have made over the last few weeks has been awesome and they can't forget that."
