PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: Allert steps in as Trojans notch IEL victory
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 1 month, 3 weeks AGO
POST FALLS — With Post Falls coach Mike Divilbiss under the weather on Tuesday, the Trojans turned to a familiar face to guide them in Inland Empire League play.
Marc Allert, who went 177-94 in 11 seasons as Post Falls girls coach, including state titles in 2013 and 2018, filled in for the Trojans in a 56-39 win over the visiting Lake City Timberwolves at The Arena.
“Mike’s been sick the last three or four days,” said Allert, who returned to the bench as an assistant coach this season after being diagnosed with a rare blood disease in 2022. “I’ve been running practices the last couple of days. I talked to him today, and he’s really sick and didn’t want to come around the kids and wanted to keep everyone healthy.”
Senior Ellie McGowan scored 18 points and senior Myckenzee Mitley added 12 points for Post Falls, which outscored the Timberwolves 31-19 in the second half.
“Really, we knew they had two really good shooters and make things as difficult as we could on the defensive end,” Allert said. “They’d been playing zone most of the year, so we were a little more prepared for that, so we ran our man stuff, and they did a great job of getting the ball into the post, sealing and getting shots inside. And it opened things up.”
“It was a total team effort, both on the offensive and defensive side,” Allert said. “Mike’s really got these guys prepared. That was him and them, not me. It was fun.”
Post Falls (6-12, 3-2 IEL) on Friday.
Senior Sadie Zimmerman scored 15 points, sophomore Macy Murphey had 12 points for Lake City (7-9, 2-2).
“We got some really good looks in the first half in particular,” Lake City coach David Pratt said. “And it did not go in, getting the ball inside and outside, and they weren’t going in. Sometimes, when you’re young you grip a little bit and really want the ball go down. Our effort was really good at times and other times it wasn’t, and you’ve got to be consistent throughout the game. Credit to Post Falls, they played hard and turned us over and that kind of hurt us.”
Lake City hosts Coeur d’Alene on Jan. 23.
“The nice thing is we get to play these teams twice,” Pratt said. “I think our kids are learning what it takes to win. Sometimes, that’s really hard, but we get to continue to work and get better.”
