PREP ROUNDUP: Humphrey propels Lady Spartans to key league win

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 16, 2025 9:10 PM

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Priest River 41, Kellogg 24

PRIEST RIVER — When Desi Humphrey's name was called Thursday night — she answered.

The Priest River High senior scored 23 points, including three 3-pointers, and collected six rebounds and four steals as the host Lady Spartans used the middle two quarters to pull away from the Lady Wildcats for a 3A Central Idaho League win.

After a low-scoring first quarter that ended in a 6-4 Priest River advantage, the Lady Spartans, fueled by two Humphrey 3s and a McKinley Burgess-Duquette steal and coast-to-coast layup that ended up being a 3-point play, went on a 12-2 run to close out the half with a 10-point lead.

Senior Paityn Yount, who had a team-high five assists and six rebounds, then hit a 3-pointer to open the third and Priest River went on another 12-2 run to pull ahead by a score of 32-12.

Junior Aleigha Jensen added 11 points and six rebounds, senior Lizzie McCracken three assists and three steals for Priest River, which improves to 10-3 and 3-0 in league play and travels to Grangeville on Saturday for another important league matchup.

Rupp hauls in school record rebounds in Lady Cats loss

Noxon 42, Clark Fork 30

NOXON, Mont. — Junior Kathi Rupp just started playing basketball in November.

Based on games where all statistics were recorded, she now holds a school record after hauling in 31 rebounds during the visiting Lady Cats loss to the Lady Red Devils on Thursday.

Rupp added eight points while outrebounding the entire Noxon team and senior Hannah Thompson netted 15 points for Clark Fork, which trailed 16-0 to start the game. After shaking off the slow start, the Lady Cats found themselves trailing just 27-19 early in the third, but Noxon built their lead back up and pulled away late.

"Noxon came out ready to get after it and brought the energy early on," Clark Fork High head coach Chris Cavanaugh said. "They played really well on both ends of the court ... we just couldn't climb out of that hole."

Cavanaugh said Gracie Stevens and Linnea Leadbetter, both freshman, played quality minutes and held their own in what was a competitive game.

Junior Piper Scarlett registered four points, Stevens added two for Clark Fork (4-9), which travels to Kellogg on Tuesday.
