COLUMBIA BASIN — It’s chilly out there, so be sure to bundle up when you’re outside between events this week. Here are a few things to check out: 


Jan. 17 


Ukulele Jams 

Ukulele jams allow you to learn or practice playing simple chords while singing along with instructor Jennifer McCarthy and other participants. Bring your instrument and desire to make music to the museum once a month and enjoy the benefits of singing and playing in a group. Don’t have a ukulele? The museum has a few on hand for you to borrow during class. No charge, ages 5 and up. 1-2 p.m. at the Moses Lake Museum & Art Center, 401 S. Balsam St. Info: Info: 509-764-3830.  


Jan. 18 


Paint4aCause — Sunshine Performing Arts 

Enjoy Charcuterie and show tunes while you paint pottery. A portion of all pottery painted will be donated to help fund future theater. Projects. 4-8 p.m. at Artgarden Pottery, 104 W. Third Ave., Moses Lake. Info: 509-750-4995. 


Live music with Jon White

Jan. 20 


Martin Luther King Jr. Program 

Celebrate the late civil rights leader’s life and legacy. Event begins with a peaceful march from the Surf ‘n Slide Water Park parking lot to the Moses Lake Civic Center, where a program with speakers and a short film will be presented. March begins at 5 p.m. Info: https://bit.ly/MLKJr25.


Jan. 21 


Snowman Showdown 

Come for a friendly snowman paint-off. Paint your best version of a snowman/woman and you just might win a prize. 5:30 p.m. at the Harvest Moon Saloon, 213 Railroad St., Wilson Creek. Info: 509-345-0054. 


Jan. 22 


Coffee/Cocoa with Ken 

Have questions about the upcoming EP&O Levy or anything else related to Ephrata schools? Superintendent Ken Murray invites you to an informal chat. This is a no-host event, so grab your favorite drink and join the conversation. 8-11 p.m. at The Bookery, 1 Basin St. NW, Ephrata. Info: 509-754-5321. 


Pottery Painting: tea party set 

This beautiful ceramic tea set will instantly upgrade little tea parties. Your child will love painting this precious miniature tea set, which serves as much tea as their imagination can brew. Stir up their creative side with this ceramic tea set, which includes a teapot, creamer, sugar, two mugs with saucers and a tray. Perfect for a tea party with your dolls. Cost is $25. Jan. 23 


Chess Tournament preparation class 

Tournament preparation class for participants who would like a briefing of what to expect at the Waypoint Foundation Scholastic Chess Tournament coming up Feb. 1. Topics will include basic chess rules, pairing, notation and more. Classes are not required to participate in the tournament, and the same content will be repeated Jan. 28. 6 p.m. at Parkway School, 1011 Parkway Blvd., Ephrata. Info: waypointfoundation.org. 


Owen Barnhart 

Country solo artist Owen Barnhart’s sets include soulful banjo, fingerpicking guitar and a crystal-clear voice — covering everything from classic country and Americana to classic rock and folk tunes. 6:30 p.m. at Gård Public House, 112 Evergreen Ave. NW, Royal City. ‘Hello, Dolly!’

Burns Night popup event

Jan. 25 


Kitchen Sink Science: Blubber — thermoregulation 


How do whales stay warm in the cold oceans? We will make an insulated mitt and find out. This is a fun science class where you will learn new things and investigate the science all around you. Speed Puzzling

Gather up a team of family or friends and compete against other seriously fast puzzlers from around the region. Teams of up to five race the clock to sort, build and complete their puzzle in the shortest time for fame, glory and prizes. Don't have a team? Let the library know on your registration and staff will pair you up with other puzzlers looking for a team. 11 a.m. at the Othello Public Library, 101 E. Main St. Info: 509-488-9683. 


Rodeo Banquet

LJ Polmateer
