PREP ROUNDUP: Spartans’ work on offensive glass pays dividends in league win over Grangeville

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 11 months AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 18, 2025 7:00 PM

GRANGEVILLE — Senior Nate Stifel amassed a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds and the visiting Spartans outrebounded the Bulldogs 33-17 in a 10-point 3A Central Idaho League win on Saturday.

"We were very aggressive on the offensive boards and with putbacks," Priest River High head coach Kevin Wylie said. "Defensively, we were pretty sound. It was mainly turnovers in the first half that put us in a game — going forward were going to have to do better with that."

Senior Palmer Coleman netted 13 points, senior Carter Cook added 11 for Priest River, which outscored Grangeville 37-26 in the second half and had 13 assists and 12 steals as a team en route to the victory.

"They were in a 2-3 (zone) and it took us a little bit to find the gaps and not attack too deep to the point where it forced us into turnovers," coach Wylie said. "Once we found the gaps, we started getting some easy looks... which was key for us. When they went man, we were also able to attack that and get easy buckets. We didn't shoot the ball overly well outside the perimeter, but did get inside the paint and got our guys involved that way."

Junior Lucas Mathews recorded nine points, seven rebounds and a team-high four steals for Priest River (9-2, 3-0), which travels to St. Maries on Tuesday for a battle that will break a tie for first in the CIL standings.
