PREP WRESTLING: Armstrong, Tucker, Booth, Leonard win at Rocky Mountain Classic

MISSOULA, Mont. — Coeur d’Alene’s Brock Armstrong (165 pounds) and Colton Tucker (150 pounds) and Nathan Booth (175) and Garrett Leonard (215) captured individual titles in the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic on Saturday at Sentinel High. 

Armstrong, a sophomore, beat Niko Coles of Glacier in Kalispell by a 13-6 decision in the 165-pound championship and was later named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. 

“Brock had some really tough matches on the way to the finals,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “In the finals, he (Coles) was a returning state champion and tough kid, but Brock kept his composure and wrestled through everything. Colton wrestled really smartly and had a good leg attack. He put in a lot of work in the offseason and has been doing a great job.” 

Booth beat Carson Shaw of Gallatin by a 5-2 decision in the 175-pound final. 

Leonard beat Mead’s Braeden Harvey by an 8-5 decision in the 215-pound championship match. It was the third time the two had met in the finals this season, with Leonard also winning at Tri-State on Dec. 14 at North Idaho College and the Pacific Northwest Classic on Jan. 4 at University High. 

“Garrett was super dominant all weekend,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “The match was tied with 20 seconds left and he got a takedown that sealed the match. Nathan was dominant throughout the tournament. For a tournament this size, it was impressive to see.” 

Freshman Nash Larsen (second at 103 pounds), junior Rocco White (third at 110), senior Will Rossi (third at 118), senior Logan Bradley (third at 144), junior Tanner George (sixth at 132) placed for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fourth with 191 points. 

Junior Josh Macdonald (sixth at 138) and junior Tucker Bridwell (eighth at 157) placed for Lake City, which was 13th with 107 points. 

Flathead of Kalispell won the tournament with 233 points. 

In the Hellgate girls Invitational, Lake City senior Alexxis Johnson beat Prairie Dawn Sellers of Browning 10-5 in the 120-pound final. Justyce Dorn was fourth at 145 for the Timberwolves. 

“Alexxis has had a couple of tournaments that she won last year, but hasn’t been able to get back to that level,” Lake City girls coach Nathan DeLeon said. “She wrestled  

Nevaeh Therrien (110 pounds) and Sofia Brown (135) claimed titles for Bonners Ferry.  


Hamilton, Martin lead 

Trojans to Tiger-Grizz title

IDAHO FALLS — Junior Damion Hamilton (165 pounds) and senior Seth Martin (190) claimed individual titles for the Trojans in the Tiger-Grizz Invitational at Skyline High. 

Hamilton beat Fabian Avalos of American Falls 4-0 in their championship match. 

Martin pinned Jean Luc-Guerra of Mountain View in 3:21 in their title match. Martin won the 170-pound title at state last year, while Luc-Guerra was fourth. 

Tristan Mendenhall (second at 98), Trey Smith (second at 175), Rider Seguine (third at 138), Matthew Hamilton (fourth at 113), Kyle Miller (sixth at 157) also placed for Post Falls, which claimed the team title with 208 points. Meridian was third with 190 points. 


Kellogg finishes runner-up

at Clearwater Classic


LEWISTON — Kevin Watson (106 pounds), Colton Storey (113), Treven Bush (132), John Brownfield (150), Levi Brown (175C) and Gracen Haynes (190C) claimed individual titles for Kellogg, which finished second in the Clearwater Classic at Lewiston High. 

Lewiston won the tournament with 213 points, followed by Kellogg with 201. 

Coeur d’Alene’s Micah Miller (98), Emmett McLachlan (120B), Seth Frederickson (132C), Carter Jones (138C) and Riley Berger (190A) won their brackets, leading the Vikings to third with 196.5 points. 

Isaiah Cramer (120A), Jared Wallace (126D), Geoff Brooks (132D), Mason Torres (157D), Kodyn Foreman (175B), Cash Preston (190B) and Kyler Miller (285A) won titles for Post Falls. 

Zach David (157), Aiden Yearout (165) and Rustle Brusseau (215A) won titles for St. Maries. 

Priest River's Colm McLaimtaig pinned Malachi Huff of Davenport, who was 31-5 on the year, and Gunnar Whitlock of Lewiston in the 144-pound championship.

Bonners Ferry 33 

SPIRIT LAKE — John Wingfield (120 pounds), Carter Loutzenhiser (157), Joseph Torr (165) and Jonathan Hansen (175) had pins for the Tigers in a win over the Badgers in the Backwoods Brawl spirit dual at Timberlake High. 

Ethan Matthews (132), Hunter Pope (144) and Illikai Aitken (190) had pins for Bonners Ferry. 

Timberlake faces Lakeland and Pocatello at Lakeland High on Jan. 30. 

Bonners Ferry hosts Sandpoint on Thursday.
