Jan. 21, 1975 – CAGIN’ QUEENS PLAY WELL
No one had heard of Sandpoint’s Cagin’ Queens two years ago when the team was being organized, but the name now means serious basketball. This year the girls have a 4-3 record. Gary Elliot helps Bob Hamilton coach both the girls’ varsity and junior varsity. Hamilton says it’s a great inspiration for the girls to have Sandpoint’s greatest basketball player coaching them. They usually practice in the gym at Washington School, which is not even half the size of a standard gym. They occasionally use the SHS gym, but only on Saturdays or if the boys’ teams are traveling. Twelve dedicated girls play on the varsity team – seniors Cindy Vig, Barbara Greenleaf, Glory Whittaker and Susan Chronic; juniors Dara Rigby, Jennifer Calkins, Julie Sherwood, Mara Lei Monroe, Michele Bopp, and Cathy Crandell; and sophomores Laura Beebe and Pam Bradetich. They are earning a place for girls’ basketball in SHS sports.

Jan. 21, 1950 – DRUGS BY MAIL
To assist county residents with necessary shopping during the blizzard period, Bi-Rite Drugs is offering a temporary “drugs by mail” service. “Most businesses regard the winter months as slack ones,” said Don Diehl, one of the proprietors. “For us, demands are at a peak this time of year for items such as cold remedies and preventatives, medicine cabinet supplies and various other items. We are concerned that many people who need these items will find it difficult to get into Sandpoint to obtain them, so as a public service during the period of emergency, the Bi-Rite will accept mail orders from anyone in the area, ship the order promptly, and pay the postage.”

BORROWED SNOWSHOES NEEDED BADLY
Two Northern Lights trucks followed the snowplow out highway 10-A Saturday, planning to tow in their service truck, which had been abandoned in drifts during Friday night’s blizzard. One truck parked, while the second proceeded to the stalled pickup and towed it back to Sandpoint. While the first truck was parked, someone borrowed a pair of new snowshoes, part of the equipment in the truck. “We certainly don’t mind loaning them,” said Gerald Mott. “A fellow needed them on that snow, but we’d appreciate having them returned right away, as our men use snowshoes daily when checking lines.”
