The Superior girls’ basketball team is one a good roll with the team picking up their third straight win with a pair of victories this past week. The Superior boys, however, have dropped three of their last four games as the young squad searches for consistency and momentum.
The Lady Bobcats began their week with a big 53-28 win over Plains Thursday night in Superior, followed by a road win over Troy Friday night, 58-33.
The boys lost two games this week to the same opponents, falling 52-36 to Plains at home, then losing 55-40 in Troy.
The girls' game against Plains began with the Lady Cats emerging from the first quarter with a slim, 8-6 lead. But Superior erased that slim deficit and built a 26-10 halftime lead by outscoring the visiting Trotters 18-4 in the second quarter.
Plains came out after the half and sliced four points off the Superior lead, making the score 34-22 with one quarter to play.
The Lady Cats defense limited Plains to six points in the final eight minutes of play while putting up 19 of their own to secure the 25-point Western 7B conference victory.
Sophomore guard Josie Crabb led the Cats in scoring with 13 points, while Makenzie Reum added 11 points to the Superior effort.
Trystan Larsen topped the Trotters with 10 points, while sophomore forward Ava Lawyer chipped in nine.
The next night, in Troy against the Lady Trojans, Superior took a 14-10 lead after the first eight minutes of play, then traded baskets with Troy in the second quarter, 8-8, to maintain the four-point, 22-18 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Braelynn Mangold tossed in seven of her game high 19 points to boost Superior to a 39-22 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The Lady Cats used a 19-11 edge in the final quarter to secure the 58-33 win.
In addition to Mangold’s 19 points, Superior, which even its overall record at 5-5 with the win, also got eight points each from Crabb and Reum.
The Plains boys emerged from their first quarter against the Horsemen tied at 6-6. But Plains, which played without standout senior guard Darren Standeford due to an unspecified injury, held Superior to six points in the second quarter while scoring 16 of their own to take a 22-12 advantage into the halftime intermission.
Superior nibbled one point off that lead in the third quarter to make it 33-24 with one quarter to go. However, Plains outscored the Bobcats 19-12 over the final eight minutes to ice the 16-point conference win.
Superior was led in scoring by sophomore post Landon Richards, who had 14 points for the game. Logan Merrill added 10 for the Bobcats and sophomore guard Gannon Quinlan scored nine.
Senior forward Zayden Allen topped Plains with 14 points, and teammate Wyatt Butcher added 13 for the Horsemen.
Friday night the Bobcats took on the Trojans in Troy and found themselves with a 13-10 lead after one quarter of play, thanks in part to Richards’ five first quarter points, including a long three pointer. Richards added six more points to his team-high 13 points in the second quarter, propelling the Cats to a 25-19 halftime lead.
Troy cranked things up in the third quarter scoring 20 points while limiting Superior to six, erasing the Cats’ halftime lead and taking a 39-31 advantage into the fourth quarter.
The Trojans then outscored Superior 16-9 in the final eight minutes of play to lock up the 15-point conference win.
The two losses dropped Superior’s boys to 5-5 on the season.
Both Superior teams are in action this Friday (Jan 24) when the travel to St. Ignatius to take on Mission High. They return home the next night for a pair of games against Thompson Falls.
