PREP BASKETBALL: Sandpoint girls knock off top-ranked Timberlake
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 8 hours, 56 minutes AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 21, 2025 9:55 PM
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sandpoint 36, Timberlake 31
SANDPOINT — Sophomore Brecken Mire scored a game-high 17 points and was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch and the host Lady Bulldogs knocked off the Tigers, ranked No. 1 in 4A, for a huge 5-point non-league win Tuesday at Les Rogers Court.
Mire scored in every quarter and also dished out a team-high three assists for Sandpoint, which led 17-16 at intermission. Sophomore Livia Driggs had eight points, including two 3-pointers, one of which was the Lady Bulldogs' only field goal in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Jordyn Tomco also had eight points and sunk two 3-pointers in the win.
Sandpoint was 12-for-15 from the free throw line, which proved to be the difference maker.
"Really pleased with the way the girls executed on the defensive end tonight," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "They did a good job at putting pressure on both Malia Miller and Diana Nelson, two of their top players who fouled out. A great job finishing by the entire team... they did an awesome job tonight."
Senior Chloe Laybourne pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for Sandpoint (8-10), which travels to Lewiston on Friday for a 5A Inland Empire League matchup.

ST. MARIES — Senior Nate Stifel posted a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds and the visiting Spartans used a 33-16 second half scoring advantage to take care of St. Maries on Tuesday for control of first place in the 3A Central Idaho League standings.
Senior Palmer Coleman recorded 10 points, including two 3-pointers, eight rebounds and four assists, senior Carter Cook had nine points and 11 rebounds for Priest River, which used a 20-5 run spanning between the third and fourth quarters to capture the victory — their first over the Lumberjacks since 2011.
The Spartans were trailing 28-21 at halftime.
"It was a fun game to coach and fun to watch the boys battle back into it," Priest River High head coach Kevin Wylie said. "St. Maries is a tough team. We knew it was going to be a battle, especially down here in St. Maries... it's always tough to win in that gym. I thought we made some good adjustments at halftime, our energy picked up in the second half, and the kids just dug in and did all the right things, made the right plays, and got the defensive stops we needed."
