Troy junior guard Carson Orr scored 14 of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter Friday to lead the Trojans to a 55-40 win over Superior.

The Trojans (6-3) broke a three-game losing streak with the win as they work to overcome a season-ending injury to senior Cody Todd. Todd suffered a lacerated kidney in a Jan. 3 game at Plains.

Trojans head coach Cody Orr said Todd had successful surgery to repair the wound.

“It’s a bummer for him and the team, but hopefully he’ll be back soon to travel with us,” Orr said. “He was scoring about 12 to 15 points per game, so we’ve been making a lot of adjustments since it happened and the kids are stepping up.”

The Trojans dropped three straight games following the game in Plains, which Troy won 52-37.

But one of those adjustments saw Orr playing more at the shooting guard spot and junior Nolan Morris playing the point.

The game was tight midway through the second quarter, 17-17, before Superior used an 8-2 run to take a 25-19 halftime lead.

But Orr’s third quarter explosion quickly erased the deficit. Senior Kempton Sloan, who also had a big game with 17 points, hit a short jumper to give the Trojans a 28-27 lead with 3:36 lead.

Superior’s Gannon Quinlan hit a 3 to make it 30-28, but Orr hit three straight baskets in a span of 1:10 to push the Trojans to a 36-30 lead they never relinquished.

Orr’s 3 with 19 seconds left make it 39-31 at th at 5 e end of three quarters. The Trojans scored the first six points of the fourth to take a 45-31 lead. Sloan hit a free throw, Morris followed with a putback and a hoop in the paint to make it a 14-point game at the 5:18 mark.

The Bobcats scored nine straight points to cut the Troy lead to five points, but Orr found junior Emerson Downey for a 3-pointer at the 1:55 mark to make it 48-40. The Trojans iced the win when Sloan was fouled shooting a 3 with 1:20 left. Sloan sunk all three shots for a 51-40 lead.

“I’m really proud of the kids and the heart they showed coming back in the second half. They were really on fire in the third quarter,” coach Orr said.

Morris scored eight points and Brody Kelso added seven points for the Trojans.

In Saturday's game, the Trojans hammered Mission 72-38.

Troy is back in action Tuesday, hosting Eureka at 6:30 p.m.
