A shipment of dogs from shelters in the Los Angeles area is scheduled to arrive at Companions Animal Center on Sunday.
CAC Development Director Vicky Nelson said because they will be mostly smaller dogs, they could take them despite a waiting list to surrender large dogs at CAC.
"Dogs from the Los Angeles shelters, which have been in those shelters prior to the fires, are being transferred to facilities across the United States," a press release said. "Companions is committed to doing our part to assist during this unprecedented crisis."
The small dog population at the center is "extremely low and there are none on a waitlist."
"We are preparing to accept small dogs from the LA shelters," the release said.
About 10 to 15 dogs are scheduled to be flown into the Hayden airport, and from there be transported to CAC.
Nelson said CAC has been communicating with rescue agencies in the greater Los Angeles area and remains in discussions with them.
The Los Angeles shelters are trying to make room for an expected increase in animal intakes due to the fires.
Once CAC has the dogs, it will provide more information regarding breed, age, medical conditions and availability.
Currently, Companions has a surrender waitlist for community dogs in need of new homes.
"All of these dogs are larger breeds, and our large dog kennels are currently full. We are working diligently to bring these dogs into the Center as soon as space becomes available," the release said.
