Arlee bull rider wins first champion saddle

Maybe Bob Schall has won 30 some trophy saddles, but R. T. Hendrickson of Arlee beat him out for this year’s Montana Rodeo Association champion bull-rider saddle, and for R.T. there’s nothing better than the first one — of which he’s justifiably proud.

He’s been riding bareback horses for years, started on bulls in 1974 and says he “took to them right away.”

He must have. After a full season of close contests, he beat out first placer John Mullen of Niarada at the finals in Butte. Schall was third.

Others from Arlee in the final competition in their own events were Brett Powell (4th), Don Garrison (14th), and Tina Lytle (15th).

Warden deplores rash of shootings

A number of hawks and owls have been found shot in recent weeks, local Game Warden Ronald Carlson said yesterday. Department of Fish and Game officials have recovered a dozen dead birds in the last weeks with the greatest number coming from the Pablo Reservoir area.

Mr. Carlson believes that the deaths are due more to ignorance of both birds of prey and the law protecting them than any other single cause.

He reminded gunners that birds of prey (raptors) are protected both by state and federal laws, and stiff sentences are provided for offenders.

The federal law allows for a maximum $10,000 fine and two years in jail, while on the state level killing raptors brings fines of up to $500 and a shorter jail sentence.

Mr. Carlson also reminded anyone finding a dead raptor that state law prohibits taking the carcass for mounting or other purposes. Instead contact the Department of Fish and Game.

Glory B heifer is Grand Champ

Four Murray Greys from the Glory B herd in St. Ignatius were taken to the breed show at the National Western Stock Show in Denver last week and did themselves proud.

Glory B owner Mrs. P.K. Castor reports that one of the yearling heifers was named grand champion, while the local ranch also captured three first places, one second get-of-sire and second and third places in best of pair.

Sandy J. Tiensvold and Cindy M. Tiensvold, both 17, tied for the position of first alternate. They are the daughters of Vernon and Doris Tiensvold.
