PREP BASKETBALL: Sandpoint girls fly by Lewiston for league win

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 22 hours AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 24, 2025 9:55 PM

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sandpoint 57, Lewiston 35

LEWISTON — Sophomores Jordyn Tomco and Brecken Mire tied a team-high 16 points and the visiting Bulldogs used a 15-3 scoring advantage in the second quarter to defeat the Lady Bengals in a 5A Inland Empire League matchup on Friday.

"That was a big momentum boost for us and gave us a comfortable lead heading into the half," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said about the second quarter. "I thought the girls executed really well on both the offensive and defensive ends — it's nice to see a quarter like that when you travel down to Lewiston. It can be such a hard road trip and is sometimes tough to get going."

Mire also pulled down a team-high six rebounds and came away with three steals while fellow sophomore Livia Driggs scored 14 points and had four of the Lady Bulldogs' eight 3-pointers.

"She led us in what was a pretty good shooting night from the outside for us; I believe we shot around 36 percent from deep," coach Love said. "Those 3s were big early on and helped us extend Lewiston's defense out. I thought we did a really good job of moving the basketball around tonight."

Senior Chloe Laybourne pitched in nine points for Sandpoint (9-10, 4-3), which travels to Lake City on Tuesday.
