PREP BASKETBALL: Driggs' career-high 20 lifts Sandpoint girls over Lake City

MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 1 day, 2 hours AGO
by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | January 28, 2025 10:00 PM

GIRLS

Sandpoint 54, Lake City 37

COEUR d'ALENE — Sandpoint High senior Demi Driggs scored a career-high 20 points, 10 in each half, and the visiting Lady Bulldogs picked up a big 6A/5A Inland Empire League win over Lake City on Tuesday night — their first win over the Lady Timberwolves since 2014.

"Demi did a really good job of attacking on offense," Sandpoint High head coach Will Love said. "The kids then started to look for her and she responded. Everyone's excited for her and it's exciting to get this win at Lake City."

Sophomore Brecken Mire tallied 12 points, five rebounds, and six assists, sophomore Jordyn Tomco 10 points and five steals for Sandpoint, which outscored Lake City 28-15 in the second half for the win.

"They really came out in the second half and just did an awesome job, especially on the defensive end," coach Love said. "Super proud of the girls for their effort tonight."

Sandpoint (10-10, 5-3) will host Lewiston for a league matchup Tuesday.

Currently, the Lady Bulldogs sit at 5-3 in the combined 6A/5A IEL standings while Lakeland sits at 4-4. Both teams have one regular season game remaining against Lewiston. If Sandpoint wins on Tuesday, according to league by-laws, they will be crowned champions of the regular season despite having two losses to Lakeland. With a win, they will also be the No. 1 seed heading into the district tournament.

Roos catches fire in Bulldogs’ rout of Bears

Sandpoint 62, Moscow 42

SANDPOINT — Even a heat check couldn't stop Logan Roos on Tuesday night.

The Sandpoint High junior scored 17 points, 11 in the second half, and netted five 3-pointers as the host Bulldogs shook off a slow start to defeat the Bears by 20 for a crucial 5A Inland Empire League win.

"That first quarter... it was really hard to watch on both sides," Sandpoint High head coach Brian Childs said. "We flipped the switch and found a rhythm in the second quarter and then had a big third. In those middle two quarters we played awfully well and we fed off of Logan with the 3-ball."

Senior Emerik Jones collected 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds and four steals while junior Kingston Corbett and sophomore Brock Yarbrough each added nine points for Sandpoint, which outscored Moscow 48-18 in the middle two quarters. Sophomore Knox Williams had six points, all from 3-point range, and registered five assists and two steals in the win.

"We got contributions from a lot of guys tonight, up and down our bench," coach Childs said. "We had guys making shots, making hustle plays. For the way we started the game, I was very proud with the way we finished it."

Sandpoint (6-8, 2-2) was originally scheduled to host St. Maries for senior night on Saturday, but that game is currently being rescheduled. If there isn't a game before then, the Bulldogs will host Coeur d'Alene next on Thursday, Feb. 6.
