COEUR d’ALENE — A hunter who trespassed on private property received a jail sentence.

Last week, a jury convicted John A. Huckabay, 73, of Coeur d’Alene, of recreational trespass, a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months in jail.

First District Judge Tristan Poorman sentenced Huckabay to 180 days in jail, with 60 days of actual jail time and the rest of the sentence suspended while Huckabay spends two years on probation. Huckabay’s hunting license is also suspended for three years, according to the Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.

The charge stemmed from November 2023, when prosecutors said security footage showed Huckabay trespassing on private property.

“Huckabay was recognized as the trespasser because this was not the first time Huckabay had illegally hunted on or near that property,” a news release said.

In 2014, Huckabay received a felony conviction of unlawful possession of a wild animal for illegally taking or possessing a cow moose, according to the prosecutor’s office.
