MOSES LAKE — Out on the very western edge Moses Lake, away from the downtown core and the shopping centers, there’s a restaurant that many local people still haven’t experienced.

“This place really is a little hidden gem,” said Megan Costello, food and beverage manager for Mulligan’s. “(We have) a beautiful view, a huge outdoor seating area, a 75-inch TV for sporting events.”

The restaurant, a part of The Links at Moses Pointe, recently underwent some management and staff changes, with an emphasis on customer service and experience, Costello said.

One reason the gem seems hidden, said Moses Pointe Golf Director Jerry Olson, is that many people assume a restaurant on a golf course has a members-only policy, which isn’t the case. The golf course is open to the public, and so is the restaurant, he said.

“I’ve heard in town things like ‘I didn’t know you could go out there. I thought it was a private club.’ … We’re always open to the public.”

In fact, about 30% of the restaurant’s clientele are there just for the food and not to play golf, Costello said.

“Our core customer is the golfer,” Olson said. “People getting food when they make the turn (on the course), getting drinks before they go out, and we have a beverage cart out on the course. But we do have people who live in the neighborhood, and people who don’t live in the neighborhood coming out to get dinner because it’s a really nice place to hang out.”

The atmosphere is quieter than a lot of restaurants, Costello said, and the wraparound deck overlooking the lake is a good place to sit when the weather is nice.

Among the updates has been a menu expansion, Costello said. Some specials are changed every week, some — every two weeks.

“Our weekday features, which change every week, we’ll post them on a board and put them on Facebook,” Costello said. “Like this week we’ve got our popper burger, which has pepper jack, sriracha mayo, jalapeños and the works … Every Monday it’s something different.”

Besides that, there’s a full list of local beers and wines, many of them local or regional, and cocktails and desserts for all tastes, Olson said.

There’s also a casual menu by an entrance at the end of the bar called The Turn, which has a smaller, more casual menu for people who want to stop off and then get back to the course.

“If you’re like, I just want something quick, order to go outside and hang out, we’ve got German dogs, we’ve got a burger, pulled pork, hoagies,” Costello said. “Quick, fun things that are actually delicious.”

Mulligan’s has also added live music on the weekends, Costello said.

“Megan’s done a great job in (creating) the culture so that when you come in, you’re going to have a positive experience,” Olson said.

“A lot of people forget we’re here,” Costello said. “There’s so much going on in town, but I’ve had several people coming in here (saying) ‘This is our little getaway; this is our hidden gem out here.’ And I think more people need to experience that.”

Pride meets taste buds at Greenpoint chili cookoff

MOSES LAKE — Greenpoint Technologies engineer Gary Neu walked away with $100 and some serious bragging rights at the company’s annual chili cookoff April 27. “My reliable meat pimps at Ernie’s (Quality Meats and Wine) came through for me again,” Neu said. His chili wasn’t very spicy, he said, just traditional. “Just a good, solid, basic chili,” he said. “I’ve learned through the competitions that you have to cater to a very neutral element … If it even looks hot (people) will run and hide. There’s bell peppers in there, so it’s got a good color, but it doesn’t really have much heat.” Greenpoint, a company that does custom interiors for private planes, has held chili cookoffs for its employees for years, but this is only the fourth year that the company has invited judges from outside the company. This year’s judges were all from the Port of Moses Lake: Executive Director Dan Roach, Facility Director Milt Miller, Airport Director Rich Mueller, Executive Assistant Bonnie Peterson and Commissioner Darrin Jackson.
