Joseph “Joe” Gregory Lapham passed away peacefully June 28, 2025, at his home in Sandpoint, Idaho, surrounded by loved ones.

Born in Seattle, Wash., he lived a full and vibrant life, dedicated to his family, country, and the Sandpoint community. Joe pursued his many passions with hard work, humility, and a sense of humor.

Joe shared an extraordinary 70-year marriage with Mae Lapham. Together, they raised three children — Marcia, Skip, and Mark. As a military family, they moved frequently in their early years, living in places such as Pensacola, Fla.; Sunnyvale, Calif.; Kodiak, Alaska; and Newport, R.I., before settling in Sandpoint in 1976.

A 1955 graduate of Gonzaga University, Joe embarked on a distinguished career as a naval officer and pilot, flying the Lockheed Constellation while at his first Operational Squadron and other Transport aircraft, including the P2V and P3C in Vietnam, eventually retiring after 20 years of service at the rank of commander. His professional achievements were matched by his personal passions, particularly fishing, which he began as a child in the mountain streams near Seattle and continued wherever life took him.

In Sandpoint, where he lived for 50 years, Joe’s love for business, real estate and finance shone through. He cherished interacting with people as much as the work itself, building lasting connections in the community. Known for the sparkle in his eyes, his quick wit, and his genuine care for others, Joe often marveled at his good fortune, frequently expressing it with a hearty “Go Zags!” in tribute to his favorite team.

Joe is survived by his wife, Mae; his children, Skip and Mark; and grandchildren Danny, Amber, and Stephen; and a wide circle of family and friends who will forever cherish his laughter and warmth.

Family and friends are invited to sign Joe’s online guest book at coffeltfuneral.com.

Arrangements are under the care of Coffelt Funeral Service.
