AMATEUR GOLF: Trio of locals gain valuable experience at PNGA Women’s tourney

by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 12, 2025 1:00 AM

WALLA WALLA — Sandpoint's Taylor Mire and Bonners Ferry's Braylyn and Avery Bayer competed against regional, national and international competition at the 123rd Pacific Northwest Golf Association Women's Amateur Event held Monday through Friday at the Wine Valley Golf Club.

Braylyn Bayer, a 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High who competes for Weber State University, made the cut after two full rounds of golf Monday and Tuesday. She finished 23rd out of 52 competitors with a 3-over-par 75 first round and 2-over-par 74 second round, tallying 20 pars and six birdies in total.

After the cut, the tournament was played in 18-hole match play format, a form of golf where opponents go head-to-head and earn points for each hole in which they have bested their opponents. In the round of 32 on Wednesday, Braylyn defeated the University of Washington's Kennedy Knox (Normandy Park, Wash.) by a 6-4 margin. Advancing to the round of 16 on Thursday, the former two-time 3A state champion, who averaged 79.5 strokes per round across three tournaments this past year for the Lady Wildcats, fell shy of Eastern Washington University's Berkley Ledesma (University Place, Wash.) by a score of 6-1 after 15 holes.

Mire, a Lewis-Clark State College commit and a 2025 graduate of Sandpoint High, tied for 37th after the first two rounds, just narrowly missing the cut by three strokes. The former two-time 5A Inland Empire League district champion fired in a 9-over-par 81 first round and a 1-over-par 73 second round, recording 21 pars and three birdies in total. In article by the LCSC Sports Information Department, head coach Zach Anderson said he can't wait for Mire to come to campus this fall.

"We are ecstatic about the addition of Taylor to the women's program," Anderson said. "She has a ton of great experience in high school and junior golf that she can carry with her into a competitive Warrior team."

In that same article, Mire expressed similar sentiments.

"The direction of the program progressing to a national level is one of the main reasons why I chose LC State," Mire said. "I look forward to putting in the work to be the best player I can be to further contribute to the success of the program."

Avery Bayer, a 2024 graduate of Bonners Ferry High who competes for Idaho State University, placed 44th with a 14-over-par 86 first round and a 2-over-par 74 second round, registering 19 pars and three birdies in total. In her first season with the Lady Bengals this past year, she tallied 17 birdies and averaged 80.33 strokes per round.

Players from Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Georgia, California, Nevada, Montana, Kansas, Utah, Canada, Australia and Singapore attended the PNGA Women's Amateur Event, which served as a great test and learning experience for the North Idaho trio. The majority of competitors were past or present NCAA Division I athletes, with schools like BYU, Long Beach State, Oregon State, North Carolina, New Mexico, San Jose State, Colorado, Cal Poly and Boise State being represented, among many others from all levels of the collegiate golf scene. Jazy Roberts of Australia won the event over The University of Oregon's Anika Varma (Rocklin, Calif.) in a head-to-head 36-hole championship match.
