Late last month members of the Columbia Falls Speech and Debate team traveled to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in various events at the National Tournament and one team ended up in the quarterfinals, a best-ever for Columbia Falls.

Carson Settles returned for a second year with his World Schools Debate team, having pre-qualified last year with an 11th place finish.

Quinn Caudle competed with a second world schools debate team.

“While all of the competitors had a fantastic run at the tournament, Quinn Caudle’s team placed 34th in World Schools Debate.  Carson Settles’s team was recognized on the big stage with their quarter final finish. A first in Columbia Falls history, Carson’s team broke into the top eight with a fifth-place finish,” speech and debate coach Dawn Roe said.

Both teams included individuals from Columbia Falls, Whitefish, Glacier, and Flathead High schools.  There were three additional teams from Montana for a  total of five World Schools teams from Montana competing against 128 teams representing eight countries, Roe said. Rounding out this year’s group were Reed Wollenzien and Kory Moran who qualified for Duo Interpretation.  There were 245 competitors in Duo with five pairs from Montana.

“These kids did a fantastic job representing Columbia Falls at the NSDA National Tournament,” Roe said.
