David Herbert Young Sr. (Dave), 89, born to parents Robert and Vera Young on Sept. 10, 1935, and preceded in death by his bride of 66 years, Barbara J. Young, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones May 23, 2025.

David was born in Freeport, Maine, moving with his family across the U.S. as a child, and growing up in the Central Valley of California. Dave married Barbara in 1959 and lived in Tracy and Modesto, Calif., for over 40 years. He was a Navy veteran and later graduated with a bachelor’s degree, becoming a juvenile probation officer for Stanislaus County for 25 years and a parole officer for the State of California until retirement. He moved with his wife, Barbara, to North Idaho to be near his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren until his recent passing.

Dave was a devoted son to Robert and Vera Young, a loving husband to Barbara J. Young,-dedicated father to three children, Penny (Mark) Rocha David Jr. and Lynda,( Keith) Klopatek. He was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren who brought him great joy.

Gathering with family for special events and holidays was a favorite, special memory maker for David. He loved to tell jokes and bring humor to these gatherings. He stayed informed and well-versed on community, political, and world events, sharing his opinion at times with great fervor. He was a Christ follower and took his faith seriously and it showed in how he lived and treated others.

In Dave’s younger years, he was an avid softball player, which has been carried on by some of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren over the years. He loved coming to their games.

David and Barbara loved traveling and saw much of the world during their adventures. They were especially fond of cruising and enjoyed being on the water. They owned several boats over the years and found pleasure in mooring their boats in Oakland, Calif., and then later, after moving to the Northwest, Lake Pend Oreille and Coeur d'Alene Lake. They loved to sit on their boat, enjoying the sunrise with a hot cup of coffee and the morning paper. As people passed by, Dave would pleasantly interact with others using his witty and jovial personality to make new friends. Nobody was a stranger, and he truly enjoyed socializing and meeting new people, especially if a pet was with the newcomers.

Dave loved animals and, especially, dogs. He had several dogs throughout his lifetime and shared fond memories of every one of them. He was a supporter and generous giver to the Humane Society.

Dave’s gentle, peace-loving, friendly presence will be missed in this world by all who knew and loved him. We know he is waiting for us with Jesus and his bride, enjoying a forever young body and mind with the peace that passes all understanding!
