Dorothy Anne “Dottie” Hodgson, age 97, passed away peacefully July 3, 2025, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

Born in Spokane, Wash., Dorothy was the daughter of Helen (Wyrick) Setters and James “Jim” Setters of Endicott, Wash. She was one of four sisters — Sylvia Buchholtz, Barbara Talsma and Helen Jane Hughes — who grew up together on the family wheat farm in the Winona-Endicott area. The sisters attended school locally, participating in 4-H, sewing, cooking and raising steers. Two graduated from Washington State College and two from Whitworth College.

Dottie married her high school sweetheart, Thomas “Tom” Hodgson, during her junior year at Washington State College. The newlyweds settled in Pullman, where Dottie graduated in 1950 with a degree in bacteriology.

Dottie was always up for an adventure. While Tom was alive, he kept her busy with countless ones — whether through their active life of farming, logging and raising cattle, or their involvement in civic and community associations. She had a story for every season and could easily fill an evening with tales of “a day in the life.” After Tom’s passing, she continued exploring, enjoying travels with friends and family — cruises, road trips and visits to Hawaii with her daughter, Patty, son-in-law Mike and grandchildren brought her great joy.

Dottie served her community in many ways — on the Benewah County Election Board for over 30 years, in the Auditor’s and Assessor’s offices and as jury commissioner. She was appointed by the governor as the public member of the Idaho State Board of Chiropractic Physicians, serving for eight years. She also served as Vice Chair of the Idaho State Democratic Party under four chairmen and attended the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter. She played an active role in Senator Frank Church’s presidential campaign and remained deeply engaged in civic life.

She was instrumental in founding the Benewah Valley Association and securing the old schoolhouse for use as a community center. Whether through 4-H, the Home Demonstration Club, school events or history displays, Dottie found joy in service.

Dottie never met a stranger — a trait she passed on to her daughter Patty. Her warmth and hospitality welcomed everyone, whether they arrived in a three-piece suit or came straight from a day in the woods or fields. She loved supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, faithfully attending their games, performances and milestones. She and Tom also encouraged the entrepreneurial spirit in the next generation.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Tom Hodgson; their children, Nancy Anne and Kenneth Hodgson; grandson, Brian Hodgson; and many cherished friends and relatives. Survived by daughter Patty Reinhardt, grandchildren: Chrystal, Nancy, Polly, Amanda, Wayne and Tom, and several great-grandchildren.

After Tom’s passing, Dottie moved to Hayden, Idaho, where she remained active in her community and close to family.

A memorial service was held Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Hayden Bible Church. Arrangements are under the care of English Funeral Chapel, Coeur d'Alene.

The family asks that you visit www.englishfuneralchapel.com and leave a memory in the guestbook.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Auburn Crest Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
