LOCAL WATCH: Dillon tosses two scoreless innings against Marion

I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 16, 2025 1:00 AM
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. — Sandpoint's Austin Dillon continues to find success in the West Coast League, a collegiate summer baseball league for standouts all over the Pacific Northwest, striking out one batter and allowing no hits over two scoreless innings in a Springfield Drifters' 8-4 home win over the Marion Berries this past Sunday at the Hamlin Sports Complex.
Dillon, a 2023 graduate of Sandpoint High and a rising redshirt sophomore at Yakima Valley College, threw 17 of his 25 pitches for strikes, with his lone strikeout coming on three straight pitches to end the seventh inning — all of which were swinging strikes — against 2025 West Linn High graduate and University of Oregon commit Danny Wideman, who was named to the WCL All-Star team this season. In the eighth frame, Dillon retired the side, which included players from St. Mary's College (NCAA Division I), St. Olaf College (NCAA Division III) and UCLA (NCAA Division I), in order.
It was a nice bounce back outing for the 6-foot 4-inch right-handed pitcher, who allowed six hits, five earned runs and a walk while striking out one batter in his start against the Yakima Valley Pippins on Thursday, July 10, a game in which the Drifters won 10-6.
Dillon currently holds a 5.88 ERA and has struck out 21 batters across 26 innings on the season. The WCL, which had four alumni selected on day one of the MLB Draft, is currently on their All-Star break. The Drifters (16-20) will resume action Friday through Sunday when they travel to Goss Stadium to take on the Corvallis Knights for a three-game series.
