POST FALLS — Roadwork is headed for the roundabout at Spokane Street and Poleline Avenue by the end of summer.
The project is anticipated to cost up to $183,788, budgeted through the street reconstruction budget. The roundabout is expected to be closed for about two weeks.
Mayor Ron Jacobson called the work “pretty straightforward.”
“You drive through it, and you realize that it’s not in good shape and needs to be repaired,” Jacobson said.
At the City Council meeting Tuesday, it was decided by the four city councilors in attendance to move forward with repairs and repaving of the roundabout. Samantha Steigleder and Nathan Ziegler were not in attendance.
City projects division manager Andrew Arbini said when the streets crew put together the annual list of paving projects, the roundabout was flagged as needing repaving and resurfacing since it was built in 2009.
The project was made a priority after cracking of the pavement surface was discovered.
“Upon further investigation of the surface area, the extent of the repair extended into the base rock as well as the subgrade surface,” Arbini said.
Interstate Concrete and Asphalt has been selected as the contractor, with construction expected to begin by Sept. 2.
Detours around the intersection will be placed as the crew will remove the asphalt, do subsurface repair and then repave the roundabout and permanent striping at a future date.
Because of the paint job, there will be a second round of short-term closures.
Pedestrian ramps will be replaced to meet ADA requirements.
Aaron Plew, Joe Malloy, Randy Westlund and Ryan Davis unanimously voted in favor of the contract for the project.
