Deanna Corrine Freiberg, 87, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in her hometown of Kalispell on July 15, 2025.
Deanna was born on April 6, 1938, in Tacoma, Washington, to Garlan and Ora Qualls. The youngest of three children, she grew up in Kalispell alongside her older siblings, Gary and Venus. Her childhood in Montana planted deep roots that would call her home again later in life.
Deanna married at just 16 and entered motherhood at 18, giving birth to her first son, Joseph. After her first marriage came to an end, she showed tremendous courage and determination by moving to California as a young single mother in search of a fresh start. While working as a secretary at Hughes Research Labs in Malibu, fate introduced her to the love of her life, Bob Freiberg. They were married on July 7, 1968, in Kalispell, and in 1970 were sealed for time and all eternity in the Cardston, Alberta Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Deanna and Bob’s journey together took them across the country—from California to Connecticut to Florida—living in places like South Windsor, Palm Beach Gardens, Palos Verdes, Mission Viejo, Thousand Oaks, and San Jose. While in Connecticut, they welcomed two more sons, Sean and Jamison, completing the lively atmosphere that was the Freiberg household.
Deanna was the heart of her family — an endlessly supportive wife, a devoted mother, and the one who sparked fun and adventure wherever she went. In 2002, she and Bob returned to Kalispell, where she treasured the close ties of family and the comfort of home.
Known for her energetic spirit and infectious hugs, Deanna’s presence lit up every room. She was famously generous, always giving thoughtful gifts and sharing her blessings freely. Her love of giving was also matched by her love of shopping, and her vast collection of shoes, clothes, and jewelry was a testament to her signature flair.
Deanna had a firecracker personality, symbolized by her favorite color — red. She was a true original — bold, outspoken, and never one to follow the crowd. Deanna could often be heard saying, "If it is to be, it is up to me!" to which Bob would tease her by replying, "If it is to be, it is up to D!" Another one of her favorite catchphrases that epitomized her spunky nature was "Nobody tells me what to do!" Her nickname, "Mama Grizz," emblazoned on her Cadillac’s license plate, was both a badge of honor and a warning. Her mother's bear-like strength was always rooted in love — fiercely protective of her family and friends, but as anyone who knew her could attest, you did not want to cross paths with Deanna.
A talented musician, Deanna graced countless church meetings and homes with her gifts on the piano and organ. She taught piano for years and served faithfully as a church organist for much of her life. Her creative talents didn’t end with music—she loved to sew, craft, and bedazzle, often wearing her own flashy handmade creations with pride and style.
Deanna is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Joe and Sherry Freiberg, Sean and Lara Freiberg, and Jamison and Annamarie Freiberg; her eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her dearest friend and sister-in-law, Rosemary Holgren.
Her legacy lives on in the music she played, the hugs she gave, the gifts she generously shared, and the strength she passed on to those she loved. She will be remembered always for her bold spirit, unwavering love, and the fierce, protective heart of a true Mama Grizz.
A funeral service for Deanna will be held on Monday, July 21, at 11 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service and graveside services to follow at Conrad Memorial Cemetery. Johnson-Gloschat Funeral Home and Crematory is caring for the family.
