Creative pizza pies

MOSES LAKE — A family-owned establishment, Slices, is carving out an unusual niche in the local dining scene. Co-owners Becky and John Boyer took a leap of faith during the pandemic, transforming their post-COVID uncertainty into a business that celebrates community and culinary creativity, Becky said.  

"After COVID, we found ourselves in an unexpected situation. My husband, John, and I decided to open our restaurant, Slices, which kind of just landed in our lap," Becky said.  

With a background in dental care and John's experience as a beer salesman, they did not envision becoming restaurateurs.  

“We didn't go looking for it," she said. "But before we knew it, we were signing papers, and we owned Slices." 

Since its doors opened in April 2021, Slices has garnered attention for its innovative menu and inviting atmosphere. The name itself, while a source of occasional confusion among patrons looking for individual pizza slices, maintains a playful spirit.  

“Slices was already established when we took it over, so we decided to keep the name,” Becky said. “It annoys a lot of people since we only sell whole pies, but we joke, ‘Yeah, it’s our name, not our game.’” 

Slices offers a wide variety of specialty pizzas.  

“We now have over 20 specialty pizzas," Becky said, "which is crazy compared to other places that only have a few options.”  

The culinary creativity doesn’t stop there, as Becky, John and other staff members experiment with unique toppings and combinations, introducing a fresh twist to traditional pizza. 

“We have build-your-own pizza, so technically people could put whatever they wanted on their pie, but we have a bunch of combinations that we have confirmed are tasty,” Becky said. “Some of them are a little odd and maybe people wouldn’t think to combine the ingredients we did, but again, they are tasty and allow people to try new things.”  

One standout creation is “The Regal Special,” which pays homage to Becky’s childhood.  

“It’s pepperoni, bacon, mushroom, olives, and pineapple," she said. "It’s just nostalgic for me because that was my dad’s favorite pizza growing up. My last name is Riegal, but we switched the spelling to make it easier.”  

The personal touch not only resonates with Becky but has also won over many regular customers, she said.  

Customers responded enthusiastically to the atmosphere and food at Slices, Becky said.  

“We’re busier every year, and it’s all just word-of-mouth," Becky said, proudly describing the community support they’ve experienced.  

The Boyers’ dedication to homemade and locally sourced ingredients has also played a vital role in their success, Becky said. 

“We don’t just get our sauce in a box; we make it fresh every day,” Becky said. “We get our meat from Ernie's (Quality Meats). We try to be fresh and local with everything we get.”  

The restaurant has become an attraction for locals and travelers alike, especially those stopping during their trips along I-90.  

“Currently, our biggest customer base is people on the go, with a Tesla charging station right in our backyard,” Becky said.  

However, the restaurant's charm truly shines during the quieter months when they attract a more local crowd, she said.  

“As the seasons change, we build strong relationships within the community,” Becky said. “They come back because they love the pizza and want to support a family-owned business.” 

Along with pizza, the restaurant also has salads, wings, sandwiches, calzones, cheesy bread, caprese bites, jammin’ jalapenos, pretzel bites and meatballs.  

“Everything but the salads gets cooked in our brick oven,” Becky said. “That is the heart of our restaurant.”  

Outside of the food, there are also televisions on the wall for people to watch sports while enjoying their pizza. 

“My husband, he has kind of turned this into his man cave,” Becky said. “All of the sports memorabilia comes from him. We have beer, too, so people will come and get a beer, eat some pie and watch the game and I think that makes us stand out in this area. Not a lot of places around here where you can do that.”  

The sense of community extends beyond just the regular customers to Slices’ staff, which is predominantly family and friends. Becky said they have around 11 staff for the six days a week they are open.  

“Our little crew includes my husband, my son, and my little brother," said Becky. "I think that mutual respect for everyone here is crucial. Once you have that, everything flows.”  

The Boyers’ commitment to family is evident in their operational philosophy.  

“We always try to keep it light and fun," Becky said. “Sure, there’s stress in running a business, but we handle it together and solve problems collaboratively.”  

This cooperative spirit, Becky said, has created an environment where staff feel valued, and customers feel at home.  

The Boyers plan to continue evolving their offerings and possibly expanding delivery options in the future.  

“As we grow, we’re considering ways to enhance our services without losing our personal touch,” Becky said.

WASHINGTON D.C. — On November 21, 2025, a bipartisan coalition of lawmakers introduced the Urban Canal Modernization Act, HR 6279, aimed at addressing the deteriorating condition of urban canal infrastructure across the country. This legislation, sponsored by Representatives Dan Newhouse, R-WA; Mike Simpson, R-ID; Adam Gray, D-CA; and Russ Fulcher, R-ID focuses on providing federal support for the extraordinary operation and maintenance of urban canals deemed to be at significant risk of failure. “As communities in Grant County and elsewhere face serious risks from aging canal systems, it is imperative that we act now to ensure vital water infrastructure is maintained and upgraded,” Newhouse wrote in a statement. “The Bureau of Reclamation’s canals are in dire need of repairs, and the surrounding communities who rely on them would be at risk if they were to fail. This legislation provides local authorities with additional resources to manage these critical pieces of infrastructure while protecting the people and property around canals of concern.”
