LEGION BASEBALL: Prairie wins class A Area A title

COEUR d’ALENE — James Morast scattered four hits in a complete game and the Prairie Cardinals scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and beat the Northern Lakes Mountaineers 6-2 to win the Class A Area A (district) tournament Sunday at Thorco Field. 

Both teams had already qualified for the state tournament at Bonneville High in Idaho Falls, which begins Thursday. 

Morast struck out three and walked three for Prairie (21-12-1). 

Trailing 2-1 entering the fifth, Prairie scored twice on Northern Lakes errors. Mason Perkins delivered an RBI single for the Cardinals, and Breckin Hanske’s single scored two runs.  

Northern Lakes (31-7) took a 2-1 lead in the third when Griffin Tamagni doubled in Jake Larcher, who had singled, then scored on a single by Ryker Brennan.

Lums win title at Oregon tourney 

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Kyle Johnson and Travis Usdrowski hit back-to-back RBI doubles to trigger a five-run fifth inning, and the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen went on to beat the Bulldogs Premier 18U 6-4 in the championship game of the Pacific Prospect Series on Sunday at Pacific University. 

Earlier Sunday, the Lums beat 503 18U Summer 6-2 in the semifinals. 

All five hits by Coeur d’Alene in the title game were doubles, including two by Johnson, who was named tourney MVP.

"He was just on fire hitting," Lums coach Jim Allison said. "Travis had a great tournament, too. All the boys played well."

Wyatt Riske pitched five shutout innings for the Lums, striking out three and allowing two hits. 

In the semifinals, Johnson went 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Jack Pierce hit a two-run double in a four-run third inning for Coeur d’Alene. 

Next up for Coeur d’Alene (26-18) is the Class AA state tournament at Rodeo Park in Nampa, beginning Thursday.
