President Donald Trump weighed in on the plea deal that allowed Bryan Kohberger to avoid the death penalty for killing four University of Idaho students in November 2022, days before a judge is set to sentence Kohberger in Boise.

“These were vicious murders, with so many questions left unanswered,” Trump said on Truth Social, the social media platform he owns. “While life imprisonment is tough, it’s certainly better than receiving the death penalty, but before sentencing, I hope the judge makes Kohberger, at a minimum, explain why he did these horrible murders.”

Under state and federal law, defendants have the right to remain silent and cannot be forced to speak, even after pleading guilty. Defendants can provide a statement during sentencing if they choose to do so.

Kohberger’s sentencing is scheduled to begin 9 a.m. Wednesday in Boise.
