Reeling in the years

COEUR d’ALENE — It’s not only the thrill of the catch that brings people back to Lake Coeur d’Alene each year for the Big One Salmon Derby.
Now in its 41st year, the competition has been a pillar of the local angler community.
“A lot of what brings people back has been that sense of camaraderie,” said Roger Blackstone, president of Lake Coeur d’Alene Angler’s Association.
Over 130 anglers kicked off day one of the Derby on Wednesday, taking to the lake in hopes of hooking the largest Chinook salmon.
Last year’s winner, Carl Hojem, took home the grand prize of $5,000 after reeling in a 25.5-pound salmon south of Powderhorn Bay.
Those who bring in the second- through fifth-biggest fish are also eligible for cash prizes, and LCAA members can win additional cash prizes for bringing in the biggest catch of each day.
All fish must meet a minimum length requirement to qualify for cash prizes: 30 inches for the adult division, and 24 inches for the youth division.
There are also $3,000 worth of rubber ducks for competitors to find, with values ranging from $25 to over $100.
Blackstone said while some anglers are repeating champions, the derby is any angler’s game.
“These guys — and the women and children — all really love it,” Blackstone said.
Wednesday’s catch of the day was a 12.9-pound, 32.5-inch salmon hooked by Russ Hogan.
One of the biggest catches of the season so far was made before the start of the Derby, with Jim Morrison catching a 19-pound salmon while practicing ahead of the competition.
“There’s some nice fish being caught so far,” Blackstone said.
The derby continues through Sunday.

Coeur d'Alene chamber grows to nearly 1,000 members as it continues to evolve
A sepia-toned photograph of about 30 businessmen hangs in the office of Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber’s President and CEO, Linda Coppess. Though dressed in the fashion of decades past, the men gathered for a purpose that has endured: uplifting area businesses through the Chamber. The photo is a reminder of the Chamber’s 114 years of history, Coppess said in her address to nearly 200 attendees at Tuesday morning’s Breakfast Connect event.
