by MAX OSWALD
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | July 25, 2025 1:00 AM

Kerry Johnson, U.S. Naval Academy Sprint Football

A 2019 graduate of Sandpoint High, Kerry was recently named the offensive captain of the 2025 Navy sprint football team. Kerry, a rising senior, is a two-year starter on the offensive line and was named First Team All-College Sprint Football League (CSFL) as a junior. He's helped anchor an offensive line that has amassed 3,479 rushing yards and 2,432 passing yards over the last two seasons — that's 5,911 yards of total offense and an average of 369.4 yards per game.

"It is an honor being on a team like Navy sprint football for three years with men that I look up to," Johnson said in an interview with the Navy Sports Information Department. "It's an even greater honor to be elected by my brothers to be the leader of our team. Seamas Carrasco (defensive captain) and I will be working hard to be worthy of the guys around us. I feel blessed for the position we are in and I am excited for the season to come."
