Springy Point announces intent to open, day use only

SAGLE — Despite the late April announcement that Springy Point would be closed this year due to shortage of park rangers and maintenance personnel, the Waterways Advisory Committee announced Wednesday that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has plans to open the park for day use in the near future.
The announcement was given by Albeni Falls Dam Natural Resources Chief Taylor Johnson, who said the park would be open to the public following the onboarding of three selected summer park rangers.
According to Johnson, the USACE had requested five exemption positions for the park, two permanent and three temporary. Due to a government hiring freeze, the positions were requested as an exemption. The exemption was ultimately approved for the three temporary positions June 2.
The positions were unlocked several weeks ago, allowing USACE to begin the onboarding process for the three summer rangers.
As of publishing, the three rangers that were extended tentative offers are currently being processed through background checks. Once those checks are cleared and start dates are determined, an opening date will be set for Springy Point Recreational Area day use.
The opening of Springy Point comes with many contributing factors to it, as it was announced earlier this year that the park would be closed for the season following a federal hiring freeze, which limited personnel available to maintain safety standards and recreational opportunities.
“We are deeply committed to preserving these lands and ensuring they remain safe and accessible. With the short staffing, my team has worked a lot of overtime because of their commitment and passion to serve the public, not solely because it is their job, but because they live in the community as well,” said Johnson. “Reopening Springy Point and restoring minimum service levels at other areas will require a collective effort, and while we are not fully there yet, I want our community to know and understand we are working hard behind the scenes and how much we appreciate their patience and support as we navigate these challenges.”
