Bulwark stays 'barber owned' under Jonah Lang

Bulwark Barber, the longest-standing barber shop in Coeur d’Alene, is in good hands with new owner Jonah Lang.

Lang got his start as a barber with Bulwark two years ago. When the previous owners announced they’d be stepping away, Lang knew he wanted the shop to remain barber owned.

Since 2014, Bulwark has amassed a contact list of around 4,800 clients and is known for its unique flair — not many shops in the area are decorated with a vintage pool table and local art.

Lang doesn’t plan on changing any of what has long made Bulwark special.

“We’re improving what we need to and are keeping what allowed (Bulwark) to stay in business for over 10 years,” Lang said. He added that repeat clients can expect a “revamped” shop when they stop in for their next cut.

All of Bulwark’s original staff, many of whom have been with the shop for several years, have stayed on. Lang plans on eventually bringing on an additional barber as well.

The barbers, Lang said, are what make Bulwark a cut above the rest. With this in mind, Lang is working to create opportunity for each barber to grow their individual business.

“There’s nobody that does what we do,” Lang said.

Bulwark is located in the heart of downtown Coeur d’Alene, inside the historic Rockford building that was originally constructed in 1952. The building, which was redone in 2019, has become a hub for vintage shops and unique local businesses like Bulwark.

Looking forward, Lang aims to continue growing “the community aspect of Bulwark.” He hopes to expand Bulwark to other locations, prioritizing communities that may not have a barber shop of their own.

Bulwark is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Appointments are preferred: call 208-661-7419.
