Whitefish Pilot | UPDATED 4 months, 2 weeks AGO
Flathead Electric Cooperative has published its updated draft Wildfire Mitigation Plan (WMP), which is open to public comment through Sept. 6.
House Bill 490, which passed with bipartisan support in the 2025 legislative session, requires electric utilities in Montana to develop and update plans by Dec. 31, with public participation, including a public comment period not to exceed 45 days.
The Co-op will hold a public meeting about its plan on Tuesday, Aug. 19 from 6-7 p.m. in the Co-op’s Community Room at 2510 U.S. 2 E. in Kalispell. Attendees will also learn about ways to reduce wildfire risk on their personal property.
Flathead Electric Co-op initially developed a comprehensive Wildfire Mitigation Plan in 2021. This plan is updated regularly and outlines organizational and operational practices implemented by the Co-op to manage and reduce the risk of the utility system causing or contributing to a wildfire. These year-round efforts help the Co-op protect equipment, safeguard employees and members, and support the safety of our communities.
