EPHRATA — Franklin Public Utility District and Grant Public Utility District are alerting residents to a surge in phone scams aimed at obtaining personal information.

Customers have reported receiving calls from individuals impersonating utility employees, asking for assistance with an "indoor pollution survey." However, authorities confirm that the calls are fraudulent.

The scammers utilize caller ID "spoofing" technology, making it appear as if the call is coming from a legitimate utility office.

"If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from Grant PUD or any utility, don't trust the caller ID,” Christine Pratt, public information officer for Grant PUD. “Hang up immediately and verify the call with us directly."

Residents are cautioned not to engage with the caller or provide any information. Instead, they should report suspicious calls by contacting Franklin PUD at 509-547-5591 or Grant PUD at 509-766-2505.

Authorities also noted that the scams aren't limited to phone calls. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office reports incidents of door-to-door salespeople offering substandard services.

“These scammers typically show up unannounced, claiming they have leftover materials and can do the job at a discount,” said Kyle Foreman, public information officer for the sheriff’s office. “Don't be pressured into making a quick decision; it’s often part of the scam.”

Common indicators of such fraud include unsolicited calls or visits, requests for personal information, and offers that seem too good to be true.

Foreman emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant.

“If someone calls seeking personal information, it should raise red flags,” he said.

The sheriff's office encourages residents to independently verify any solicited service via trusted contact numbers.
