QUINCY – The Quincy Jacks boys soccer team ended their Spring 2025 season with an overall record of 13-9-1, earning third place in the district tournament and making it to state.

“I think everybody in the program can agree that we had a really successful season back in 2A,” Jacks head coach Hector Vaca said. “I just want to acknowledge the players for all of their effort, if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be where we are.”

The Jacks’ goals as the season began were to just aim to have a winning season and make sure that the team’s overall GPA improved from what it was the year prior.

“Just kind of outperform what we did last year,” Vaca said. “That was just the main priority.”

This was the team’s first season back in the 2A league playing in the Central Washington Athletic Conference. Vaca said that it was a very exciting opportunity for the players to play against the other CWAC teams as he knew the abilities of the players were good enough to compete at a higher level.

Over the course of the season the team earned the title of co-league champs in the CWAC, had nine players make the All-League team, player Kasey Toevs earned the title of Defensive Player of the Year and made it to state.

The Jacks started their season against two 4A schools and played a couple of 1A schools throughout the season. The coach said it was their third game of league play that the team truly started to feel the difficulty that playing in the CWAC would bring.

“I knew and I truly believed that these guys were good enough to compete anywhere,” Vaca said. “The level of competition everywhere, it was good, and these guys were hanging in with everybody.”

The main struggle for the Jacks this season was the lack of a full squad due to injury throughout the season. The coach said there were only around three or four games where all players were healthy and available.

Their fourth game of the season against the 4A school Davis was one of the games they played with a full squad. This game highlighted what they were capable of at full capacity and were able to stay neck and neck with the competition ending the game in a 0-0 tie.

The Jacks kept up their momentum and ended the season as second in the CWAC, placing them against the Othello Huskies in the first round of district championships.

“We were feeling pretty confident going into the postseason,” Vaca said.

The Jacks fell to the Huskies 2-4 in the first round of the playoffs, putting them into a must-win against East Valley. The team would respond by winning 1-0 over East Valley, putting them in the final four against Grandview.

Vaca said the game against Grandview was a tough loss for them as they stayed in it the whole time, but fell into the third-place game against Ellensburg to either go into the crossover or be eliminated. The Jacks would go on to rally and beat Ellensburg for third in the CWAC and beat West Valley in an overtime shootout to make the state tournament.

In the first round of the state tournament, the Jacks played against North Kitsap on the road. They would end up falling 1-3 to North Kitsap, who would go on to earn second in the state.

“The state game was just a tough game,” Vaca said. “North Kitsap is a good team; they have a lot of 2A postseason experience with being in the final four the last five years in a row.”

The Jacks squad will be graduating three seniors this year, leaving 19 players set to return for next season. Vaca said the squad will have a majority of sophomores and juniors returning this year and is glad the freshmen on the team had the opportunity to experience the state tournament.

There were multiple games throughout the regular season and postseason that allowed everyone on the team to play and get the experience of playing at a higher level, which will benefit the younger players in the long run, according to Vaca.

“I have really high expectations for these guys, and the guys have really high expectations for themselves, so it’s just a matter of clicking,” Vaca said. “Now we have a year under our belt in the CWAC, so I think these guys know what it takes to win and know what it takes to get to state now.”

Tigers start summer 3-1 after split with Sunnyside Christian

EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tiger Baseball Club (3-1) finished their second matchup of the season as they split a doubleheader with Sunnyside Christian Tuesday evening. “I was pleased with a lot of aspects of the doubleheader,” said Tigers Head Coach David Tempel. “The summertime is all about development and getting some experience. The good part about (Tuesday) is we were in some different situations that we haven’t seen much, so we were able to learn from those and use those to our advantage.” Sunnyside was the first on the board during game one as they put up two runs in the top of the second inning. The Tigers responded at the bottom of the third as they put up five runs to claim the lead.
