POST FALLS — An abundance of buttons are populating Templin’s on the River today and Saturday as the Idaho State Button Society celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Kristy Eversole said each button has a story.
“You see things that are reflective of our history,” Eversole said.
A set of glass buttons came from the attire of a Black laundress named Aunt Dinah who worked at Fort Sherman.
Another entry specific to an occupant of the fort was Gen. Frank Wheaton, commander from 1880-1886. The exhibition traced how you could indicate the rank of general by placing the buttons in bunches of three at a time.
Simone Kincaid showed several buttons and said she’s reached the point of saturation with the hobby where she is more discerning of what she buys.
The fascination of the context for a time, a place and a profession can be told through buttons. And in addition to the history that surrounds a button, there’s another strong argument for collecting them.
“It's art,” Kincaid said.
The button show and sale is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, at 414 E. First Ave., Post Falls.
The theme for the show and button sale is “Idaho is Golden.” Entrance is $3 for adults. Kids are free.
“Outside the Button Box” will be presented by Gil Biggie of Reno, Nev., at 11:30 a.m. Friday and “My Adventures Collecting Bakelite” with Margaret Belisle of Helena, Mont., will be presented Saturday.
Visitors can also learn more about their family's heirloom buttons from collectors and vendors.
“I love history, I’m an archaeologist and this was really fun to do to put the images with the buttons because I think it tells a story,” Kincaid said.
