POST FALLS — The “Run Like the Winded Decathlon” benefits the Boys and Girls Clubs of Kootenai County and takes place 8 a.m. Saturday at Post Falls High School track and field.
Ryan Wood said the idea came from a conversation a group of wrestling coaches had while driving back from a match.
"People are competitive, especially wrestling refs, and one of them said he could run a mile in six minutes," Wood said.
Everyone felt they could rise to the challenge, so Wood started to figure out what they needed to train in to complete a decathlon.
"It was a trash-talking session and we’ve already raised $4,000 for the Boys and Girls Club," Wood said.
His 10-year-old son, Miles, will also be competing. The adult competitors feel confident in their throwing skills for discus, javelin and shotput, but are keeping an eye on Miles for speed events since he's a good runner.
The public is welcome to cheer on the athletes and perhaps provide a little motivation.
"You can get right there on the field and heckle people," Wood said with a laugh.
