ACH Warriors celebrate accomplishments at commencement

COULEE CITY – Last Saturday marked the end of an era at Almira/Coulee-Hartline High School for the Class of 2025 as they graduated from high school and head into their futures.
“We gather not just to celebrate accomplishments, but to recognize the journey, the growth and the spirit of perseverance that brought each one of the graduates here today,” said senior class Vice President William Allsbrook.
ACH High School principal Kelley Boyd said this year’s theme for her words of wisdom speech to the Class of 2025 came from a conversation with the class valedictorian on self-motivation that spread around the class as a running joke.
“Safe to say motivation was really never in question, but the more I thought about it the more I realized, this whole class has shown us what true self-motivation looks like,” she said. “Every single one of you sitting here today has faced your own set of barriers, any yet you showed up, you put in the work, and you got here.”
The class valedictorian, Grayson Beal, thanked all the staff, parents and anyone else involved in their support in getting the Class of 2025 where they needed to be, giving a special thanks to Boyd and Jennifer Goetz for their efforts in getting each of them onto the graduation stage.
Beal said his love for playing sports in high school was his greatest motivation for showing up and aiming to excel in the classroom.
“As most people here in attendance know, we came up just short multiple times,” said Beal. “In the past, I thought that would be devastating, but over the course of these not-so-storybook endings, I realized that is not the case. While sports were amazing and a great time of my life, they were only a small portion. I have so much left in store, so much more to achieve when sports are over for me.”
Beal moved to the area in eighth grade from Everett and said it was a big change moving into a smaller community.
“It was a new sense of community and really shaped me into who I am and I’m so grateful for it,” he said.
Associated Student Body President Emma Whitaker and ASB Treasurer Carter Pitts shared the honor of giving the Salutatorian speech as they both earned the title this year.
“I couldn’t be more grateful to share this with one of my closest friends,” said Whitaker.
The two said that one of the greatest parts of their high school experience was the time they got to spend with their classmates. Everyone in the Class of 2025 pushed each other toward success and supported one another through everything.
“Our class dynamic is one of the most diverse, but also one of the most united,” said Pitts.
During the ceremony, the class took a moment to honor the memory of their classmate, Blake Wallace-Alberto Escalera, who passed away last fall. Boyd said that Escalera had a major impact on the lives of all the students who attended the school throughout his time there and participated in school activities in any way that he could.
“He just was a fun kid to have around,” said Boyd. “He always had some health things, and we were really hoping that he would be here today.”
ACH senior class president Jeremy Pinar gave the farewell speech for the ceremony, where he reminisced on the journey that brought them all to this point.
“I’ve gone through my entire K-12 education in the same ACH school system, I’ve lived in the same house outside of Almira my whole life, I know nothing but the feeling of growing up in a small, close-knit community,” said Pinar. “Yet I can wholeheartedly say that I would never trade it for anything else.”
Carter Pitts stands while being recognized for receiving grants and scholarships to attend Washington State University. Pitts said his favorite memory from his high school career was winning the state championship with the football team in his freshman year which he wore the championship ring for the graduation ceremony.ARTICLES BY CALEB PEREZ
Correia reflects on making All-State team
COULEE CITY — Multiple basin athletes qualified to play in the All-State Baseball Series from June 27-28 in Yakima, with Almira/Coulee-Hartline graduate, Caden Correia being one of them. Correia said he was initially selected for a feeder game ahead of his state qualification. “I was at practice one day, and my head coach (Hunter Lee) came up to me and he’s like, ‘Hey, you got selected for an All State feeder game,’” said Correia. “I actually got invited to two, the Central Washington one and the Spokane one.” Correia said he decided to go with the Spokane feeder game since it was taking place at Avista Stadium and he had a desire to compete at that venue. Once he played there, Correia was informed that he was also selected to play for Team Baker in the All State games, an opportunity that he couldn’t pass up.
Tigers first wrestling camp deemed a success
EPHRATA — The Ephrata Tigers Wrestling camp was held June 29 through July 1 where young wrestlers came together to practice and learn more about the sport. Tigers Boys Wrestling Head Coach Joe Knox said he was pleased with how the camp turned out. “We had mostly younger boys and then some middle school girls, so we had a good mix of kids, and I thought it went really well,” said Knox. “The kids were really energetic, we had a lot of fun, and we learned a little wrestling along the way.” The main goal for Knox at the camp was to teach the young group of kids the fundamentals and focus on the basic skills of wrestling.
