COEUR d’ALENE — The Kootenai County Democratic Central Committee has elected new leadership, a move the party said signals the beginning of a new chapter.

The central committee voted unanimously this week to elect Sarah Martin as party chair. She replaces longtime party chair Evan Koch, who recently announced his retirement.

“I’m honored to serve and eager to build on the foundation that Evan helped establish,” Martin said in a news release. “Real change comes from standing together around the issues that matter most. It’s time to rebuild the sense of community in Coeur d’Alene by focusing on what unites us: dignity, fairness and a shared future we can all believe in.”

Martin has lived in Coeur d’Alene for more than 16 years and previously served as a poll worker and a precinct captain for the Kootenai County Democrats.

She “deeply understands the importance of compassion, fairness and public service,” according to the Kootenai County Democrats, values that were instilled in her by her grandfather, who was a World War II veteran and college professor.

“Her work in social services and higher education has helped her guide others through some of life’s toughest moments — all while prioritizing the power of kindness and connection,” a news release said.

The central committee also elected Adam Bennet as vice chair.

In a statement, the Kootenai County Democrats acknowledged former chair Koch’s “strong and humble” leadership through “a challenging period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and outside political pressures.”

“Evan’s leadership is an example of our larger American experiment,” the Kootenai County Democrats executive committee said. “America is more than just one man, one president, one party. Evan recognized that our strength lies in unity and understanding. As we move into the next chapter of our organization’s story, Evan has positioned the party for continued success. We are strong because of the legacy he leaves and we will continue to advocate for all Idahoans to have a place at the political table.”

Koch will remain active in party leadership as vice chair of the Idaho State Democratic Party. He will also mentor new members who plan to revive the Kootenai County Young Democrats.
