AA Lakers drop opener at Palouse tourney

PULLMAN, Wash. — Coming off a tournament title in Idaho, the Kalispell AA Lakers were held to four hits in a 5-1 loss to New Level Stevenson 17U Thursday, at the WSU Palouse Summer Series tournament.
Andre Cephers had the lone run batted in for the Lakers (21-9), driving in Hunter Fann with a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning.
That cut Stevenson’s lead to 2-1, but the Spokane squad got that run back with an RBI double from Wyatt Plyler in the fifth inning. Two more runs came in the sixth inning, one via a triple from Beckett Turnbow.
Plyler and Dominic Weems split the pitching duties for Stevenson (16-7). Weems threw three hitless innings of relief. Both hurlers struck out four.
Luke Nikunen started on the mound for Kalispell and lasted six innings, allowing 11 hits, two walks and five earned runs. He hit one batter and fanned four.
The Lakers play Moundtime 18U McGraw of Hillsboro, Oregon on Friday. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
