Whitefish Mountain Resort sees six inches of snow on summer solstice

The precipitation-filled forecast last weekend delivered, as Whitefish saw about 2 to 3 inches of rain and about 6 inches of snow at the summit of Big Mountain.
In Glacier National Park, Going-to-the-Sun Road reopened at 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Park officials had proactively closed alpine sections of the road at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 20, in anticipation of the rain and snowfall, which made the area susceptible to mudslides and icy conditions.
Now that the skies have cleared, much of Northwest Montana still remains drier than normal.
The Flathead River basin has received 72% of the 30-year median for precipitation in June so far this month.
Since Oct. 1, 2024 – when the water year starts – the Flathead basin has received 88% of the 30-year median for precipitation.
Flathead County was in a moderate drought, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor, as of June 19, just prior to the rainfall this weekend. The monitor updates weekly, so it won’t see another refresh until Thursday.
