Major upgrades coming to Heyburn State Park

PLUMMER — The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation is upgrading services and other areas at Heyburn State Park to the tune of more than $20 million.
"This is a complete marina replacement with significant expansion of public access," said park manager Nathan Blackburn. "There will be an extensive boardwalk 1,000 feet into the water on the breakwater, more slips, hand launch and storage, a dedicated swim area, and major upland improvements with storm water mediation, paved parking, a marina store, a boat fueling station and boat wastewater pump out."
The project is also intended to address aging structures, sedimentation, noxious weeds and shoreline loss, and overall shoreline enhancement to improve public access, according to a press release from IDPR.
All told, the project will cost $23 million, Blackburn said.
Construction at Chatcolet Marina began May 9 and is expected to continue throughout this year and into 2026. The Chatcolet parking area and boat launch will be closed throughout the construction period. The only boat launch access to Chatcolet Lake from Heyburn State Park will be at Rocky Point Marina.
There will be limited parking available by Indian Cliffs, with additional spots to access the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes. Additional parking is available at Plummer Point day use area
"Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes users are strongly encouraged to access the trail outside of Heyburn State Park for this year due to restricted parking," the press release said.
For former marina customers, the dry dock storage area is available for boat lease spots, which cost $100 per month.
Heyburn State Park sees around 180,000 day users and 24,000 campers yearly. The Chatcolet marina is the most popular access point for The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes and is the busiest day use area in the park, Blackburn said.
Contact the Heyburn State Park Visitor Center at 208-686-1308 with any questions regarding access or the project.
