Hayden Lake residents propose one-way traffic for portion of Lakeview Drive

HAYDEN LAKE — Traffic concerns are nothing new along Lakeview Drive.
Residents have long voiced concerns over speeders and a higher volume of traffic along the community’s main thoroughfare, Councilor David Weinstein said.
“It’s become an issue that citizens are unhappy about,” he said.
One proposal could bring major changes to Lakeview Drive, with some residents calling for traffic to be limited to northbound-only travel between Miles Avenue and Bozanta Drive, Weinstein said.
The current southbound lane of travel would be designated for non-motorized travel, and traffic delineator posts would be installed to separate the two lanes.
Weinstein said that residents have proposed such a plan at the last few city council meetings.
“Council, in good faith, has to pursue these suggestions,” Weinstein said.
Resident Mark Lord said that while Hayden Lake is a growing community, there are better ways to address the increased traffic volume on Lakeview Drive.
“(The city) has to take measures to alleviate these issues, but this is something that would worsen the (issue, not make it better,” Lord said.
Hayden Lake’s next city council meeting is slated for March 11 at 5 p.m.
Though the Lakeview Drive proposal is not on the official agenda, Weinstein said he anticipates that residents will bring the issue before the council once again during the meeting’s public comment section.
“It would be a major change in the traffic flow in a small city,” Weinstein said.
If the proposal continues to gain traction, a public hearing could be held as early as April or May.
