Polson Seniors: Looking for volunteer drivers
Pete Mangels | Lake County Leader | UPDATED 2 weeks AGO
If you haven’t set your clocks forward by now, it’s not too late.
St. Patrick’s Day is March 17, and perhaps the next day too.
The Vernal (Spring) Equinox (equal amounts of daylight and darkness) is on the 20th. In Montana, springtime does not start until May 1, and lasts only two weeks, then Tourist Time starts, followed by Forest Fire Time.
Due to the ever-increasing lunchtime food deliveries, we will be able to add an additional route. Routes should take about 45 minutes, all within a five-mile radius of Polson. Each route will have about 12 stops. Volunteers will be used each weekday and may pick from one to five days to deliver.
We are looking for up to five drivers to be used on a regular basis. We provide vehicles to use, but some drivers prefer their own cars. We do not reimburse for gas. Come in and shadow our drivers to learn the routes. Call for further details.
We currently have more than 70 clients receiving delivered meals each day. We need your help, please!
Taxi service is available for Polson area seniors who are, disabled or unable to drive. We drive to local businesses, health offices or care facilities. Round trip is $5 plus $1 for each additional stop. Reservations 24 hours in advance are highly recommended, as we have only one driver available each day. Short notice calls seldom work.
Free AARP tax preparation assistance is available Mondays and Thursdays. Call us to make an appointment.
AARP also offers a Safe Driver Course from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. March 25. Call the senior center for sign up. Class size is limited to 20; the $25 fee includes a study guide for further reference.
Bowling “no-tap” is Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m. Join any time.
Activities at the Polson center, open to all, include: self-guided, video-assisted exercise, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays; Bingo at 6 p.m. Fridays, with playing card bingo on the first Wednesday of each month.
Pinochle is now offered two days a week: 12:15-3 p.m. Mondays or Thursdays; and the pool table is open for play 8 a.m.-3 p.m. weekdays.
Invite a foursome for Wednesday Play Day to play cards, board games, dominos, Mah-Jong, etc.
A veteran’s service officer visits the center on the first Friday and third Tuesday of each month.
Sit-down meals are available from 11:45 a.m.-12:30 p.m. weekdays, and delivered to qualified people who call before 10 a.m. A suggested donation of $5 helps support the nutrition program.
Upcoming main dishes include chicken strips and tater tots, March 13; Caesar salad, March 14; corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick’s Day, March 17; beef enchiladas, March 18; hamburger gravy and mashed spuds, March 19; turkey pot pie, March 20; and chicken and ham wraps, March 21.
Our community center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays at 504 Third Ave. E. For more information, call 406-883-4735, email polsonseniorcenter@gmail.com or visit us on Facebook.
