PREP ROUNDUP: Sandpoint baseball wins first game thriller, splits with Lewiston
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 9 months AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 18, 2025 8:45 PM

LEWISTON — Senior Jesse Turner was 2-for-4 and struck out four batters over a solid six innings in the first game as the visiting Bulldogs split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader with the Bengals on Tuesday in their season-opening series.
Sandpoint led 5-2 heading into the bottom half of the final inning, but Lewiston tabbed junior Parker Reichart for three runs to send the game into extras.
Reichart, however, wasn't frazzled.
In the top of the eighth, he hit a two-run single to center with the bases loaded and the Bulldogs added on another run to take an 8-5 lead. Looking to close out the game again, Reichart was successful on go number two, striking out two of the final three batters he faced to pick up the win.
Senior Drew Lehman added a pivotal two-run single to right field in the top of the sixth that gave Sandpoint some separation. Junior Soren Caprio drew four walks in five plate appearances for the Bulldogs, which drew 10 walks total in the opener. It was the Bulldogs' first victory over the Bengals since April 29, 2021 when they won 10-9 in the nightcap of a doubleheader.
As for the nightcap on Tuesday, it was a hard-fought battle, with the Bengals coming out on top by just one run.
Junior Mason Little hit a sacrifice fly to left in the top of the second, but that's all Sandpoint would plate until the top of seventh. With the bases loaded and zero outs, the Bulldogs only brought home one run via a walk as Lewiston closed things out.
Junior Dallen Williams got the nod for Sandpoint and struck out four batters over four innings of work. Sophomore Brennan Shaw struck out two batters across two innings in his varsity debut.
Sandpoint (1-1, 1-1) will travel to the Buck's Bags Invite set to be held Thursday through Saturday at Rodeo Park in Nampa. On Thursday, the Bulldogs will face off against Parma and Homedale.

SANDPOINT — Junior Arah Stevens went a combined 2-for-7 with an inside the park home run to deep right in the second game as the host Lady Bulldogs were swept by the Lady Bengals in their season-opening 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader held Tuesday at War Memorial Field.
Senior Abi Miller, like Stevens, also had a hit in each game for Sandpoint. Freshman Marlee Stevens struck out four batters across six innings in her varsity debut and had an RBI single to left during the fourth inning of the first game.
Freshman Bailey Wilson also toed the rubber in her first career varsity outing and struck out six batters, going the distance in the nightcap. Sophomore Teagan Newsom had an RBI single to center during the first inning of game two.
Wilson, along with freshman Avery Inge, both notched their first career varsity hits during the doubleheader.
"I thought our pitchers threw well — bright futures for them," Sandpoint High head coach Leah Platt said. "Avery Inge was solid behind the plate and Abi Miller was busy at second base and in the outfield... I thought the team showed a lot of fight and resilience; it's a great start to the season."
Sandpoint (0-2, 0-2) will travel to Middleton High just outside of Boise for the Win the Pitch Spring Break Classic (WTP) on Friday and Saturday. They'll face off against Canyon Ridge and Kuna to start things off.
