PREP ROUNDUP: Lancaster, Newsom help Sandpoint softball to first win over Lakeland since 2021
MAX OSWALD | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 3 weeks, 6 days AGO
I grew up in the small town of Orwigsburg, Pa., where I resided all of my life before moving to Sandpoint. I attended Blue Mountain High School, where I participated in cross country and track and field, a sport that I ended up falling in love with. I went on to attend and run for DeSales University (with other brief stints at Susquehanna University and Elizabethtown College) and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in sport communication with a minor in sport management. I remember just how great it made me feel when I was mentioned in my hometown newspaper. I want to be able to give that feeling to every athlete in Bonner County, no matter how big or small their accomplishments are. As an athlete myself, I know how many hours of work are put in on a daily basis, and that hard work deserves to be recognized. It is my goal to cover as much of the Bulldogs, Spartans and Wampus Cats as I can. I want to work with every athlete, parent, coach, administrator and the community to ensure the best stories are published. | March 25, 2025 8:30 PM

SANDPOINT — Senior Bailey Lancaster was 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI in the nightcap, sophomore Teagan Newsom hit a walk-off RBI single to center field for the win in game two, as the host Lady Bulldogs split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader with the Lady Hawks at War Memorial Field on Tuesday — notching their first win over Lakeland in four years in the process.
"Her bat really came alive tonight; it was bound to happen at some point, but I'm glad it was tonight," Sandpoint High head coach Leah Platt said of Lancaster's performance. "She did a great job."
In game two, down 6-3 in the fourth, junior Cadence Skibitsky hit an RBI single to center field and Lancaster rocked a two-run double to left to tie the game at 6-6. Down 8-6 in the sixth, Lancaster hit an opposite field RBI double to right and senior Emma Kohal knotted the game at 8-8 with an RBI single to center a couple of at-bats later.
In crunch time, freshman Avery Inge, who was behind the plate and had a hit in both games, drew a walk to lead things off. Newsom, with two outs, smacked one to center for the 9-8 walk-off victory.
"I think I was running with Avery all the way from third base to home," coach Platt said about the winning hit. "Bottom of the seventh, two outs, that's what movies are made of. Tonight was just pure fight and determination, nobody gave up, and everyone contributed something, whether that was as a baserunner or in the dugout with a positive attitude. Our outfield did outstanding with lots of putouts by Ainsley (Hull) and Cadence. We have a lot of freshman, a lot of seniors, and a few in between, but they're all complimenting each other well and starting to understand that team-first mentality."
Platt also noted good pitching from freshman Bailey Wilson in the opener and from freshman Marlee Stevens, who went the distance on the rubber in the nightcap and struck out six batters.
Sandpoint (1-7, 1-3) hosts Coeur d'Alene for an Inland Empire League doubleheader Thursday.
