PREP SOFTBALL: 5A rivals Lakeland, Sandpoint split

SANDPOINT — Kiersten Drake hit a solo homer in the second inning and a two-run shot in the third as the visiting Lakeland Hawks beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 13-3 in the first game of an IEL doubleheader Tuesday at War Memorial Field.
Jaiden Corbey went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and four runs scored in the opener for Lakeland (3-4, 1-2 IEL).
Drake homered again in the second game, and finished 2 for 4 with three runs scored. Delilah Zimmerman hit a two-run double in the fourth.
Sandpoint (1-7, 1-3) won the second game 9-8 on Teagan Newsom’s walkoff single in the bottom of the seventh.
Lakeland returns to action April 8 at home vs. Coeur d’Alene in an IEL doubleheader.

MOSCOW — Freshman Ollie Dudley scaled the fence to take away a two-run home run in the second inning of the opener, and the visiting Vikings went on to sweep the Bears in an IEL doubleheader at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.
"I couldn’t be prouder of our freshman and how much she contributes to the team,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “Ollie’s play completely changed the game.”
Jenna Davenport drove in three runs, two on a fifth-inning double, for the Vikings in the first game.
Kyndal Bridge homered and drove in a pair of runs in the opener for Coeur d’Alene (4-0, 2-0 IEL). Davenport struck out eight in six innings.
Moscow is 1-6, 0-2.
Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint on Thursday for an IEL doubleheader.

LEWISTON — Layla Gugino homered twice and drove in three runs in the second game as the visiting Timberwolves earned a split with the Bengals in IEL play at Airport Park.
In the second game, Maddy Blood struck out nine and scattered three hits for Lake City (4-4-1, 2-1 IEL). Mariah Thomas had three hits and drove in two runs.
Gugino’s second homer was a two-run shot in a five-run seventh.
Karsyn DeMent was 4 for 8 on the day for Lake City.
Lewiston is 3-5, 1-3.
Lake City travels to Moscow on Thursday for an IEL doubleheader.

SPOKANE — Freshman Prestyn Gardner hit a grand slam for her first varsity homer in the second inning and finished 3 for 4 with six RBIs as the visiting Tigers beat the Pirates in nonleague play.
Gardner hit a two-run double in an 11-run first inning for Timberlake (3-1).
Marissa Needs hit a three-run homer in the first for the Tigers, and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs scored.
Shae Jones struck out seven, walked none and allowed one hit in three innings in the circle, and hit a two-run homer in the third and finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs and three runs.
Reese Allaway hit a two-run single in the third, and finished with four runs scored. Alannah Winland was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.
“Great game for all the girls today,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We got a lot of at-bats and made good contact. Prestyn Gardner hit the ball hard all day. Marissa Needs was a tough out all day, and her and Shae did some great things on the mound.”
Rogers is 0-2.
Timberlake plays host to Colville on Thursday.

ST. MARIES — The host Lumberjacks settled down after a rough first inning to beat the Bulldogs in the Central Idaho League opener at City Park.
Addy Stewart hit a three-run triple in the second inning for St. Maries (3-2) to tie the game at 5. She finished 3 for 4. Addilyn Turner went 3 for 5.
“Once we settled in, we started making plays,” St. Maries coach Lane Watkins said.
In the second inning, Lumberjacks left fielder Kendra Nicholson chased down a shot to the fence, threw to shortstop Stewart, the cutoff person, who threw to third baseman Turner to retire the Grangeville batter trying to stretch a double into a triple.
Grangeville is 1-5.
St. Maries travels to Kellogg today at 3 for a CIL game.
